Tonight, we kicked off the public events for our America 250/Tusculum 232 Celebration that will be happening throughout the fall semester. Tim Massey, Greene County's historian, presented “The South: Where the Tide of the American Revolution Turned” in Chalmers Conference Center on campus.

During his talk, Massey discussed the Battle of Kings Mountain and the Overmountain Men and read the sermon and prayer delivered by the Rev. Samuel Doak during the group’s muster at Sycamore Shoals in what is today Elizabethton. Doak later co-founded Tusculum Academy, a predecessor name for what is now Tusculum University, Massey also touched on many other elements of the Revolutionary War.

We are grateful to Massey for his insightful lecture and additional insights offered during the question-and-answer session.

Now that the academic year has started, we took time today to thank our faculty and staff, who perform exemplary work in helping our students become career-ready professionals!

We held our annual Tusculum Family Reunion, a chance for employees to gather, relax over a great lunch and participate in Tusculum trivia. As part of our America 250/Tusculum 232 celebration this year, we added some trivia about the United States.

Members of the Student Government Association Executive Board assisted with the event. We were grateful for their presence.

We are thankful for all of our faculty and staff!

Some volleyball anyone? Yes! Our students turned out in droves tonight to enjoy beach volleyball on our intramural courts. They held a tournament. that enabled them to have a fun time together.

The evening was even more blessed with the presence of leaders from Young Life College, a ministry that provides Bible studies and social events on campus to help students draw closer to the Lord.

The Student Government Association and Young Life College teamed to provide a wonderful event for our students. Students enjoyed their volleyball, as well as some co****le and spikeball, and heard an uplifting spiritual message and an invitation to deepen their faith as well.

Tusculum University is focused on a holistic education, one that enables students to grow in the classroom, in the social life and in their relationship with God.

Continuing our delivery of beneficial information about artificial intelligence, one of our business professors will lead a series of workshops on this technology.

The first session is Friday, Sept. 4, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and is titled “AI Basics Bootcamp: Your Hands-On Introduction to AI.” This workshop and all of the others are taught by David Hite, associate professor of business and director of Tusculum's Center for Free Enterprise and New Venture Creation.

The remaining sessions are:

Thursday, Sept. 10, 9-11 a.m. – “Get Hired with AI”
Friday, Sept. 18, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – “AI Bootcamp for Small Business”
Friday, Oct. 2, 8 :30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – “The AI-Ready Leader: Leading in the Age of AI”
Friday, Nov. 6, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – “Claude at Work: Your AI Productivity Partner”

Tusculum family members and the community experienced spiritual enrichment through song and word tonight in Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center!

Madison Metcalf-Shelton, a traditional and contemporary gospel musician, and her musical friends performed a beautiful array of songs during Night of Worship that uplifted the audience. She is also a Tusculum student, pursuing a degree in education, in our online undergraduate program.

Joining her were the Rev. E.J. Swatsell, director of spiritual life and special projects, and other Tusculum students, who delivered powerful messages that resonated with those in attendance. Dr. Scott Hummel, Tusculum's president, delivered a helpful prayer and welcome.

We love having the opportunity to gather and worship the Lord as a Tusculum family and with the community. We are grateful to those who joined us tonight!

Tusculum University Educational Talent Search staff members are excited about another year of serving students in middle school and high school in East Tennessee.

This is a special time for our Talent Search program, which is 50 years old this year. We have been pleased to help children whose parents and guardians do not have a bachelor's degree and who meet income-eligibility guidelines. The team provides several events and services and one-on-one guidance, all of which are designed to encourage students to enroll in college.

We are also pleased because we recently received word about funding for the year for Talent Search from the U.S. Department of Education. We are extremely grateful to Rep. Diana Harshbarger for her advocacy for Talent Search and working with the Department of Education to secure the funds.

Tusculum serves more than 1,200 students in Talent Search, and that number is expected to grow to 1,300. Among the services the program provides are:

Academic, financial, career and personal counseling
Career exploration and aptitude assessment
Tutoring
Information on colleges and exposure to college campuses
Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications
Mentoring

We invite you to Night of Worship, a tremendous spiritual growth opportunity available at Tusculum University.

Night of Worship will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Marilyn duBrisk Theatre inside Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the community.

We are thrilled Madison Metcalf-Shelton, a traditional and contemporary gospel musician, and her musical friends will perform. Listening to her sing with her tremendous voice will be a blessing to everyone in the audience. The Rev. E.J. Swatsell, Tusculum's director of spiritual life and special projects, will provide inspiring words, and some of our students will give testimonials.

Starting today at 6 p.m., the Center for the Arts will hold auditions for "The Taming of the Shrew" in Behan Arena Theatre at Tusculum University. Auditions will continue tomorrow at the same time and location. The Behan is located on the lower level of Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center.

Steve Schultz, the show's director, seeks to cast 20 parts for “Shrew” – 17 with speaking roles and three who will sing in the production. Those who audition need be at least 14 years old, but Schultz said the cast will leaning on older actors because of the difficulty of the roles.

Performances of “Shrew” will be Thursday, Dec. 3-Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Marilyn duBrisk Theatre inside Annie Hogan Byrd.

Then next week, we will hold auditions for "Edgar Allan Poe and Other Haunted Stories in the Woods." Those will take place Sunday, Sept. 6; Monday, Sept. 7; and Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. in Behan. Performances of “Poe” will be Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Doak House Museum, with gates opening at 6 p.m.

Art was an excellent way for Sophee Gomberg to relax and was one of her favorite classes when she was younger. In the spring semester of her freshman year at Tusculum University, she made art and design her major with a concentration in studio art. She quickly realized she had made the correct decision.

Now a junior, Gomberg continues to progress in her studies. She entered pieces of her art in a competition at this year’s Appalachian Fair in Gray, which concludes today, and earned first place awards for an abstract painting and a character painting and a third place award for a landscape painting! She said it was nice to receive the awards because the fair is well-established after 100 years of operation. It was also rewarding because art is so subjective, she said. Her success was included in a story in the Johnson City Press.

Her decision to enter the competition was inspired by a speech singer-songwriter Eric Church gave in which he said, “Plant yourself somewhere. Put down roots with the full intention of growing there.” She put his words into action.

“This summer I’ve worked on planting roots,” Gomberg said. “I started coaching youth lacrosse and entered items in the fair, and I’m currently building a little free library. Greeneville is my home, and I love it here. Although those things may seem small, it helps build our community.”

Gomberg thoroughly enjoys Tusculum’s art and design program and says the people in it are the best part. She praises Benjamin Conley, assistant professor of art and design, as a great teacher and said everyone in the program is nice. Being able to take classes in the expanded three-dimensional sculpture laboratory and relocated and larger two-dimensional studio art laboratory funded by retired professor Clem Allison has been fantastic, she said.

“We are receiving a solid foundation in art and design while also being encouraged to express as much creativity as possible,” Gomberg said. “I’ve been able to study different areas of art – from painting to graphic design to sculpture. It’s been a lot of fun to work with different mediums. I loved color theory, and my painting classes have probably been my favorite.”
