SPORTORIALS Spotlight: "Timing Mistakes and Corrections" by Dan Shepardson

Are you prepared to recognize and correct timing mistakes?

Dan breaks down the latest NFHS rule changes, including the use of a SILENT COUNT to correct game-clock errors and the requirement to remove a minimum of 0.3 seconds when the clock fails to start in the final 59.9 seconds of a period.

Great work, Dan! ⏱️🏀

You just missed a call. ❌

You know it. The coach knows it. The crowd knows it.

Now you have a choice. ⚖️

⏱️When you miss a call, how quickly can you reset mentally and give the next play your full attention?

Sportorials Spotlight: “Beyond the Whistle” by Felix Addeo

Officiating is about much more than rules and mechanics—it’s about the character, values, and decisions we bring to the game every time we step on the floor. In his latest Sportorials article, Felix Addeo explores the importance of sportsmanship, professionalism, handling criticism, and performing under pressure.

Read the article and take a moment to reflect on what it truly means to serve the game beyond the whistle!

Hey IAABO!

An official inadvertently sounds their whistle while the ball is in flight from A1 to A2 in Team A’s backcourt. The AP arrow favors Team B.

What is the correct ruling?

A. Team A is awarded the ball at the spot nearest where A2 catches the pass.

B. Team A is awarded a backcourt designated-spot throw-in based on where A1 released the pass.

C. Ignore the inadvertent whistle, and allow play to continue without a suspension of play.

D. Due to the inadvertent whistle, the alternating-possession procedure awards the ball to Team B.

Hey IAABO!

On the jump ball to begin the game, exactly when should the game clock start? ⏱️

Is it when:
👉 The referee releases the ball?
👉 The ball reaches its highest point?
👉 A jumper legally touches the ball?
👉 A player controls the ball?

Do you take a quick peek at the clock to make sure it started properly? 👀⏱️

RAISING THE STANDARD. GET INTO THE WEEDS. 🏀

Those were the themes of the IAABO Board 65 clinic this weekend — and IAABO Executive Director Donnie Eppley didn’t just hear the themes… he lived them.

Donnie was on the floor, working with officials, sharing insight and helping them become better. Then he was right back at it in the postgame video sessions, getting into the weeds of plays, positioning, decisions and the little things that separate good from great.

And then came a pretty special moment.

Donnie had the opportunity to watch Player to Official graduate Chris Williams call his first foul AND his first violation as an official.

Think about that.

A former player. A new official. His first calls. And the Executive Director of IAABO there to witness it.

That’s what this is all about.

Raising the standard.
Getting into the weeds.
Investing in people.
Growing the next generation of basketball officials.

What. A. Day.

🏀 The Player to Official Initiative continues…

That’s right!

After graduating from the IAABO University Rules & Mechanics Course this summer, along with supplemental Zoom sessions led by IAABO University Coordinator Andy O’Brien, these new officials were invited to take the next step:

➡️ Attend the IAABO Board 65 Clinic alongside officials from across Greater Philadelphia!

This is what a pathway looks like.

From player → student → official.

IAABO, Inc. is thankful to Board 65, giving these graduates the tools, experiences and connections they need to continue developing their craft.

To help get them started, each graduate received a Fox 40 World whistle, Smitty Officials Apparel shirt and pants. 📈🔥

Feels like yesterday… ❤️🏀

The 2026 was such an amazing weekend, and this picture is a perfect reminder of what makes IAABO special.

Chris Solano, Joseph Thompson, and Bernard Bowen—proud members of IAABO Bd. 42, NY—alongside IAABO Executive Director Donnie Eppley.

These are the moments that make more than just officiating. It’s the people, the relationships, and the connections that last well beyond the weekend.

What a weekend. What a group. What an association. ❤️🏀

Already looking forward to the next one!

What is IAABO Select?! 👋🏀

We teach you how to watch YOUR games. 📈

When you learn how to become an elite self-evaluator, you elevate your habits, your self-talk, and your overall performance on the court.

This is EXACTLY what you’ll learn to LOVE doing when no one is watching.

IAABO Select officials are leaning in HARD right now—using video to fine-tune their skills and prepare for the upcoming season.

When you see yourself on video, everything changes.

1. Pause button
2. Positioning on Throw-in = ❌
3. Why? Honest reflection...
4. How are you going to fix it? New habit...? New self-talk...?
