Pivoting is an entrepreneur's superpower. Because the future is rarely predictable, successful entrepreneurs understand that flexibility is often more valuable than rigid adherence to an original plan. Pivoting means fundamentally changing a business's direction when you realize its current products or services aren't meeting market needs.

Uncertainty is a fundamental part of being an entrepreneur. The best entrepreneurs embrace the unpredictable and learn to thrive despite, or because, of it. Those who learn to navigate the unknown with confidence, creativity, and perseverance are better equipped to create value, solve meaningful problems, and achieve long-term success.

Did You Know?

90% of workers plan to work into their 60s, and 25% of workers plan to never retire. Interestingly, for the 25%, especially those who are healthy, it's not about the money. Why not ask a 76-year-old why they still work?

A Broader Understanding of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is often described as the act of starting a business. That definition is understandable because entrepreneurs frequently establish companies, develop products, hire employees, and pursue profit. Yet it is incomplete. A business is one possible outcome of entrepreneurship, not its full meaning. At its core, entrepreneurship is the disciplined process of noticing an unmet need, imagining a better response, gathering resources, and acting despite uncertainty. It combines curiosity with initiative and turns ideas into value for others. A person can therefore behave entrepreneurially within a school, nonprofit organization, government agency, neighborhood, or established corporation without ever registering a new company.

This broader view matters because it shifts attention from ownership to behavior. Starting a business is a legal and economic event; entrepreneurship is a way of thinking and acting. The entrepreneurial person asks why a problem persists, who is affected, and what practical experiment might improve the situation. Instead of waiting for perfect information or permission, that person begins with available resources, learns from feedback, and adapts. The result may be a profitable venture, but it could also be a community program, an internal workplace improvement, a new teaching method, or a public-service innovation.

Entrepreneurship Program Welcomes Hugo Lopez as Graduate Teaching Assistant

The Entrepreneurship Program at Fort Hays State University is proud to welcome Hugo Lopez as the new Entrepreneurship Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) beginning in the Fall 2026 semester.

Hugo is no stranger to the FHSU entrepreneurship community. He has been actively involved in several of the university's signature entrepreneurship initiatives and has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation, leadership, and student engagement.

One of Hugo's most notable accomplishments was his outstanding performance in the 2026 Faulkner Challenge, where he earned recognition as one of the competition's top participants. His success in the Challenge highlighted his entrepreneurial mindset, creativity, and ability to develop innovative business solutions under competitive conditions.

Hugo has also shared his entrepreneurial experiences with fellow students as a featured speaker in the Entrepreneur Connect series at the Dane G. Hansen Entrepreneurship Hall. During the program's live bimonthly event, he discussed his entrepreneurial journey, the lessons he has learned, and the importance of embracing innovation and opportunity. His presentation inspired students to pursue their own entrepreneurial ambitions while reinforcing the collaborative culture that defines the FHSU entrepreneurship program.

As Entrepreneurship GTA, Hugo will support faculty in entrepreneurship courses, assist with student engagement activities, contribute to entrepreneurship events and competitions, and help strengthen the vibrant entrepreneurial community within the Dane G. Hansen Entrepreneurship Hall.

"Hugo has already demonstrated exceptional leadership, initiative, and a genuine passion for entrepreneurship," said Dr. Ed Vengrouskie, Entrepreneurship Faculty at Fort Hays State University. "His enthusiasm for helping others learn and grow, combined with his entrepreneurial accomplishments, makes him an outstanding addition to our program. We are excited to welcome him to our faculty team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our students."

Please join us in congratulating Hugo Lopez on his new appointment. We look forward to the energy, creativity, and dedication he will bring to the Entrepreneurship Program and wish him continued success as he begins this exciting new chapter at Fort Hays State University.
