Scottie Volleyball fans! We are doing a fund raising drive that is based on the number of kills we have as a team this year. The idea is for you to pledge so much per kill. HCC Volleyball Ranked No. 22 Nationally

Highland Community College volleyball has earned a spot in the NJCAA Division II national rankings, with the Scotties coming in at No. 22 this week.

It is the first time the Scotties have appeared in the national rankings in five years. Highland’s last ranking came on August 18, 2021, when the Scotties were ranked No. 19 in the preseason poll after a successful season the previous year under Coach Jon Bingesser.

The recognition is a significant milestone for a program that has continued to build since Head Coach Andrea Keller returned to lead the Scotties for the second time in her career in September 2023.

Under Keller’s leadership, the Scotties have steadily developed their skills, built a strong team culture and established themselves as a program capable of attracting talented local players to compete in the challenging Jayhawk Conference.

Keller has also intentionally scheduled matches against nationally ranked opponents, giving the Scotties opportunities to compete against some of the best teams in the country and learn from those experiences.

That approach reflects the team’s philosophy: get better every time the Scotties step on the court.

“It’s great to be ranked, but it’s most important for everyone to put all they have out on the court each and every practice and game,” Keller said. “We do that by respecting each other, pushing each other in practice, and being good teammates all year long.”

Being included among the nation’s ranked teams is a privilege and a reflection of the work the players have put in together. The Scotties are proud of the athletes who represent Highland Community College, as well as the families who support them and the fans who continue to show up, travel, watch online and cheer them on throughout the season.

For the program, that support is an important part of what makes the experience special.

“We want to put a team on the court that we can be proud of, but we also want to put a team on the court that our fans enjoy watching,” Keller said. “We are so grateful for everyone who supports these players and this program.”

The national ranking is certainly something the Scotties can celebrate, but it is not where the team’s attention will stay.

Whether Highland remains in the rankings throughout the season is not the focus. The focus is on becoming the best team the Scotties can be-one practice, one match and one day at a time.

“If we do that, the wins and losses and rankings will take care of themselves,” Keller said.

And if you haven’t had a chance to watch the Scotties play this season, there are still plenty of opportunities to see them in action.

Come out and watch Highland compete. Just be prepared: you might be exhausted by the end of the match!

Scotties Make Their Mark at Pensacola State Tournament

The Highland Community College Scotties wrapped up a challenging four-match weekend at the Pensacola State Tournament in Pensacola, Florida, with plenty of reasons to be encouraged—most notably a statement victory over nationally ranked No. 20 Calhoun Community College.

Highland opened the tournament against Northwest Mississippi Community College, falling 3-0 by scores of 17-25, 20-25 and 21-25. The Scotties finished the match hitting .211 as a team while continuing to compete defensively and gain valuable experience against a strong opponent.

The Scotties' second match turned into a five-set thriller against Pearl River Community College. Highland took the opening set 27-25, dropped the next two, and battled back to win the fourth 25-21 before Pearl River narrowly claimed the deciding set 15-13. Highland produced one of its strongest offensive performances of the weekend, hitting .351 as a team. Contributions came from throughout the lineup as the Scotties kept the match competitive from beginning to end.

Then came the weekend's biggest moment. Highland took down No. 20-ranked Calhoun Community College, 3-1, winning three extremely competitive sets by scores of 26-24, 26-24 and 25-23, with Calhoun taking the third 25-23. The Scotties hit .240 as a team and received contributions across the court, including strong offensive and defensive efforts and a presence at the net. Highland's ability to stay composed in the tight moments ultimately made the difference.

The win over Calhoun gave the Scotties a signature victory against a nationally ranked opponent and demonstrated the team's ability to compete—and finish—when the pressure was at its highest.

Highland closed the tournament against No. 8-ranked Pensacola State Community College, facing another nationally ranked team in the final match of the weekend. The Scotties continued to battle, finishing the match with a .211 team hitting percentage and five blocks, with contributions from multiple players throughout the lineup.

The Scotties finished the Pensacola tournament 1-3, but the weekend was about more than the record. Highland faced a demanding schedule that included two nationally ranked opponents, pushed Pearl River to five sets and came away with a significant win over No. 20 Calhoun.

“I’m really proud of how this team competed in Pensacola,” said Head Coach Andrea Keller. “We put ourselves in some tough situations against very good teams, and our players continued to fight, adjust and believe in each other. Beating a nationally ranked team like Calhoun was a great accomplishment, but I’m just as proud of the way we competed throughout the entire weekend. We’re going to take what we learned, build on it and continue getting better.”

Our trip to the Pensacola State Invitational Tournament was an incredible experience for our team, and it was made even more special by the amazing support we had along the way. We had Scottie fans travel all the way to Pensacola to cheer us on in person—and we know many more were watching and cheering from home through the livestream!

To everyone who traveled, watched, sent messages, cheered, encouraged and supported our team—THANK YOU! Your support means more to our players and coaches than you know. 💙

We also want to give a huge thank-you to everyone who supports our Scottie Volleyball fundraising efforts throughout the year. Because of you, we are able to provide our athletes with opportunities like this trip and experiences that become memories they will carry with them long after their playing days are over.

From hosting All-Star Games, youth camps and team camps to all the other ways our program works to raise funds, we are incredibly grateful for everyone who shows up and supports Scottie Volleyball.
