Official Statement on the Passing of Eugene “Mercury” Morris

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene “Mercury” Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77. Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion. His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football’s greats.

Beyond the field, Mercury was a devoted father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community. His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami.

Survived by his children Geno Morris, Maceo Morris, Tiffany Dotson, Troy Jeffery-Morris, and Elliott Morris, and his siblings Jcynthia Smith, Valerie Miles, and Janice Walker, Mercury’s legacy is carried on by those who knew and loved him most.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, both in the game of football and in life.

The family kindly requests privacy during this difficult time.

One Picture is worth a thousand words.
Don Shula and I on the sideline awaiting for Larry Seiple to make up his mind when he was going to take off and run with the ball from punt formation. "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."
We practiced that in Miami. Coach Shula told Seiple "I give him permission to run with it at any time, as long as he makes it."
-And that was Don talking, not me. I was just sitting there with my fingers crossed, and notice that Don had his arms crossed, meaning Larry Seiple better make it!

This is the real pro bowl where they actually played the game to win. It was not touch football, it was real football. Remember, when this picture was taken, the league was only 2 years old! That's January 1972. "Christopher!" ( pronounced like Tony Soprano's nephew) are old enough to comment on the 1970 post merger Pro Bowl that was played after Super Bowl Six? That would be after the merger in 1970 NFL / AFL I actually played in that genuinely competitive football game, that still had the feeling of us ( 10 year old AFL) against them( 50 year old NFL). It was, as I look back to January 1972. This story is too good to simply recount in this post. So, I am going to make a video and let you experience the evolution of the history of the NFL Pro Bowl, from someone who was there. I remember seeing Bart Star ,Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke. It was old school then. When I was a kid in the early 1960's, I remember seeing these players on Thanksgiving day. Now in 1972 (January) they were across the field in the Coliseum in Los Angeles. I played in that game. That "game" then, was real. This is a story about how that "game" was the beginning of my Pro Football career. To be continued.

My website www.mercurymorrismedia.com is now finally open. The password to the website is contained in this statement: "love can be a triangle, but a a triangle can't be love. love can be a disaster, but a disaster can't be love. A number can be a digit, but a digit doesn't have to be a number." Are you still thinking? Stop! The code to enter the site is 17-0. Mercury Morris Media is a content mall, so shop around in the old-school version of a stroll down memory lane from the 1970's

let me know what you think about it.

In August of 1965, Gene Morris, at age 18, left home in Pittsburgh, PA to attend college at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas.
