Meet Lia Beverly!

We’re excited to feature Lia Beverly, a sophomore in the Marshall University Honors College and a member of the Marshall Volleyball team!

Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Lia chose to major in Communication because she plans to pursue a career in Sports Business and attend law school after graduation.

For Lia, one of the biggest benefits of studying Communication is the opportunity to develop core communication skills that can be applied to a variety of fields and careers. She is particularly interested in how those skills can be used in areas such as social media and public relations.

Looking ahead to the fall semester, Lia is especially excited for her Social Influences and Interpersonal Communication classes.

As a Communication student, Honors College member, and Marshall student-athlete, Lia is making the most of her experience both in and out of the classroom. We’re proud to have her as part of the Marshall Communication community and can’t wait to see where her journey takes her!

Concept: Framing

What it means: Framing refers to the way information is presented, which can influence how people understand and interpret an issue.

Everyday example: Is a glass "half full" or "half empty"? Both describe the same reality, but each frame creates a different impression.

Why it matters: Understanding framing helps us become more critical consumers of news, media, and persuasive messages.

Meet Audrey Evans!

We’re excited to feature Audrey Evans, a first-year master’s student in Communication at Marshall University!

Audrey’s favorite Communication class is Health Communication, a field that aligns with her future goals. After completing her master’s degree, Audrey plans to attend Ph.D. school with the goal of becoming a professor.

Outside of the classroom, Audrey’s favorite place on campus is the Rec Center. When she’s relaxing, she enjoys watching Landman and listening to her favorite song, Goodness of God.
For future Communication majors, Audrey has some simple but meaningful advice: “You don’t have to be perfect to succeed.”

Her journey is just beginning, and we’re excited to see all that Audrey accomplishes as she continues her education and works toward her goal of becoming a professor. We’re proud to have her as part of the Marshall University Communication community!

Concept: Active Listening

What it means: Active listening is the practice of fully focusing on, understanding, and responding thoughtfully to a speaker rather than simply waiting for your turn to talk.

Everyday example: When a friend shares a problem, active listening means asking follow-up questions and reflecting on what they've said instead of immediately offering advice.

Why it matters: Strong listening skills build trust, improve relationships, and reduce misunderstandings.

While we are sad to see her leave, we are excited to celebrate Dr. Jessica Snitko as she embarks on a new professional opportunity as Head of Research at Hand-Off.

Dr. Snitko has been a valued colleague, educator, mentor, and researcher whose dedication has enriched our department in countless ways. Her passion for meaningful research and student development has left a lasting mark on our community.

At Hand-Off, Dr. Snitko will oversee research examining how patients transition between healthcare settings. Through interviews, focus groups, and needs assessments, her work will help identify opportunities to improve communication, healthcare quality, and patient safety across the care continuum.

Congratulations, Dr. Snitko! We are grateful for all you have contributed and wish you the very best as you take on this exciting leadership role.

While we are sad to see him go, we are thrilled to celebrate Dr. Clinton Brown as he embarks on a new professional adventure.

Dr. Brown has accepted a position as Director of Behavioral Science at Ipsos, where he will work at the intersection of research, communication, and decision-making, helping clients in Healthcare, Pharmaceuticals, and MedTech develop effective, evidence-based messaging.

Dr. Brown has been a valued colleague, mentor, teacher, and researcher whose impact will be felt long after his departure. We are grateful for the energy, expertise, and dedication he brought to our department and our students.

Congratulations, Dr. Brown! We wish you nothing but success in this next chapter and look forward to following your future achievements.

👏 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Clinton Brown 👏
We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Clinton Brown, our newly tenured Associate Professor, who was also featured in the Winter–Spring edition of Marshall Magazine! Dr. Brown is a Health Communication scholar and an active leader at Marshall—serving on Faculty Senate, overseeing the Presentation Center, and directing the basic course, among many other contributions.

🎓 Graduate Spotlight: Jake Manning

We are proud to celebrate Jake Manning, one of our graduating graduate students in Communication Studies! 🎉

During his time at Marshall, Jake developed a strong scholarly focus on interpersonal communication in sports, combining academic rigor with real-world engagement. His work has been presented at several respected academic conferences, including the Midwest Popular Culture Association Conference, the Central States Communication Association Conference, and the International Association for Communication and Sport Conference in Dublin, Ireland.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Jake demonstrated a deep commitment to applied communication and leadership by serving as a volunteer coach for the Marshall Women’s Volleyball team, bringing theory into practice through mentorship and team communication.

This fall, Jake will continue his academic journey at the University of Kentucky, where he will pursue his PhD, maintaining his focus on interpersonal communication in sport contexts.

Congratulations, Jake—we are excited to see your scholarship, leadership, and passion for sport communication continue to grow! 🎓✨
