“I’ve learned that some of the most valuable and rewarding learning opportunities are those that place you in the center of the action, providing a first-hand look into classroom concepts being put into action. For me, being a student of Political Science, there is truly no better place to learn than on Capitol Hill.”

So good to hear from CALEB FERGUSON, a Hedrick Scholar, who is interning through May and June on Capitol Hill for U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito.

“I have loved being a part of the Honors College! It’s given me opportunities I never thought I would have while still in undergrad.

My freshman year I got to work on TEDxMarshallU, which helped me make a connection that resulted in the best College job I could’ve hoped for!

I’ve felt cared for and supported by every Honors faculty member I’ve interacted with.

Without the Honors College my time at Marshall would look very different. I’ve gotten to work on the TEDxMarshallU team twice, serve as an Honors ambassador for multiple semesters, and make some great friends.”

Girl, we honestly don’t know what we’re gonna do without you!

“It pushed me to grow beyond just academics.”

🩺 Congratulations to AVA YOUNG, a Hedrick Scholar graduating cm laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the College of Health Professions.

“During my time in the Honors College, what I’ve appreciated most is how much it pushed me to grow beyond just academics. It challenged me to think more critically, manage my time effectively, and step outside of my comfort zone.

Balancing the demands of nursing school with Honors coursework wasn’t always easy, but it taught me resilience and discipline, skills that I know will be essential as I transition into my nursing career and eventually graduate school.

I also really valued the sense of community and the opportunities to engage more deeply with my education. It made my college experience feel more intentional and meaningful.

For anyone considering the Honors College at Marshall, I’d say it’s absolutely worth it if you’re willing to challenge yourself. It gives you the chance to grow in ways that go far beyond the classroom and truly prepares you for what comes next.”

Shine on Ava, and don’t be a stranger. The Honors Ambassador team will miss you!!

“The Honors College has allowed me to grow into different parts of myself that I never realized were there.

Through writing on and editing the Oracle, being an Honors Ambassador, and immersing myself in Honors courses, I was able to discover a version of myself that is more resilient and deeply connected to the campus community.

Beyond the academics, I found a network of lasting friendships and professional connections that shifted my entire perspective on what it means to be a student.

Seeing the university through this lens of collaboration allowed me to find my place and my voice in ways I hadn’t expected.

The support of the Honors College was quintessential in this process. Having that consistent encouragement and mentorship provided the foundation I needed to take risks and grow with confidence.

Because of this, I’m finishing my undergraduate career with a profound sense of belonging and a clear vision of the person I’m becoming.”

These rockstars have attended a speed networking banquet with Marshall’s Top Scholars and enjoyed the TEDxMarshallU event. They’ve each crushed four scholarship interviews, and were treated to a mini Honors seminar with the 2024 West Virginia Professor of the Year.

This evening, they kick back and relax on campus. Welcome to the Herd!
