🎉 A Historic First for TCA Region 1! 🎉

On September 26, we proudly hosted the inaugural TCA Region 1 Student Counseling Leadership Program Advocacy Conference at SHSU–The Woodlands Center, welcoming 60+ participants from SHSU, Lamar University, Texas Southern University, and UH–Clear Lake!

Our students stepped up as advocates and leaders, and we could not be prouder of the passion, creativity, and professionalism they demonstrated. 💚
A special thank you to our phenomenal speakers and panelists: Dr. Angela Jones, Dr. Emily Horton, Milton Smith, Minet Cortez, Dr. Donetta Shelby, Nick Guyton, and Christavia James, as well as our judges Dr. Cicelia Como, Dr. Cecily Batiste, Kierra Bridgewater, John Randall, Christavia James, and Minet Cortez. We were also honored to welcome TCA leaders, including Past President Dr. Katherine Bacon.

Congratulations to our Advocacy Campaign winners—doctoral student Sarah Stewart and master’s students Allyse Doiron, Jada Perry, and Dejanay Kelly—who received a combined $1,000 in prize money sponsored by Aspen Counseling & Wellness, Counseling in Color, and JD & Associates! 🏆

🎓 Building Community Across Cohorts! 🧡💙
There’s something special about bringing our doctoral community together beyond the classroom! We were excited to host our first Doctoral Mixer, with students from Cohorts 22, 23, 24 and spouses/partners gathering for an evening of connection, conversation, and community.

Doctoral education is about so much more than coursework, research, and dissertations. It is also about the relationships we build along the way—the peers who become colleagues, the faculty who become mentors, and the community that reminds us we don’t have to navigate the journey alone.

A special thank you to Dr. Rice and Dr. Stover for organizing this opportunity for our doctoral students to connect across cohorts. We also appreciate our Department Chair, Dr. Holman, and our faculty who came out to spend time with our students: Dr. Akay-Sullivan, Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Page, Dr. Bleike, Dr. Giang, and Dr. Garza-Chavez.

Here’s to creating more spaces where our doctoral students can connect, collaborate, build relationships, and grow together as future counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, advocates, and leaders. 🧡

Advocacy isn’t only at the Capitol. It happens in the therapy room, the school hallway, the locker room and the systems around the people we serve.

Join the TCA Region 1 for an Advocacy Conference, a day focused on how counselors can advocate for clients, communities and each other.

This year’s sessions:

🧒 Beyond behavior: advocating for children and adolescents. When kids are understood only through their behavior, their needs get missed. Learn to challenge deficit-based labels, elevate youth voice and work with caregivers, schools and agencies to improve the systems around young clients.

🤱 Who’s taking care of mom? Maternal mental health. This session examines gaps in how maternal mental health is recognized and treated. It covers how counselors can help mothers name their needs, challenge stigma and unrealistic expectations, and build systems that respond earlier.

🔥 Sexuality as part of mental health. Many counselors hesitate to talk about intimacy and desire. This session offers practical language and a culturally responsive, trauma-informed approach to discussing sexual well-being without shame or unnecessary referral.

🫠 Burnout is a systems issue. Self-care matters, but it isn’t the whole answer. This session reframes counselor well-being as an advocacy issue and helps you decide when to cope and when to push for change in policies, workplaces and professional expectations.

🏈 Getting coachable to athletes. What if “uncoachable” says more about us than about the athlete? Drawing on Solution Focused Brief Therapy and football’s “teach tape,” this session introduces a not-knowing posture that supports athletes through curiosity and respect.

🎤 Featured panel: Counselors as Advocates: Using Our Collective Voice, with Adeli Minet Cortez, LPC-S; Dr. Katherine Bacon, LPC-S, TCA Past President; and Milton Smith, LPC-S

This event is for school counselors, clinical counselors, supervisors, counselor educators and graduate students.
