- Colonel Canfield D. Boone, a 1971 Butler University alum, died at the Pentagon during the attack.
- Irwin Library was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, who is best known for designing the original World Trade Center complex in New York City. You can see Yamasaki pictured here with a model of the Twin Towers. When visiting Irwin Library and Butler Libraries, you can see architectural similarities between Yamasaki's buildings.
- The Butler Collegian first reported on 9/11 during the September 13 edition, which was misprinted as September 6. They would later run additional stories and updates on the tragedy.
Then Butler University President Fong shared the following sentiments in a campus-wide email sent on September 11, in which he stated, "In this time of bewilderment, fear and anger, I ask that we support one another... There is much we will have to learn about the causes, agents and victims of this tragedy over the next days. Let us be a community of caring in action during this time."
The campus community quickly came together, attending a prayer service at noon and an evening candlelight vigil on September 11th. Then once again for a memorial service and another candlelight vigil on September 14th. The Butler community hosted educational sessions and dialogue, donated blood, and the Greek community raised $10,000 for the Red Cross by conducting a 96-hour trampoline jump-a-thon led. International students joined with other Butler students to create and distribute posters promoting peace.
