Sloan MHA Program - Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy Preparing health care leaders for the next generation.

The first of its kind in the United States, the Sloan Program is a highly selective 2-year, residential, CAHME accredited degree program. The program curriculum combines rigorous coursework with a robust practical training component which includes a required summer internship, a colloquium series bringing industry experts to campus, an annual intersession field trip to meet industry leaders, and a

second-year capstone project. Our values: Critical thinking, integrity, leadership and teamwork, services excellence, evidence-based research, sense of community, and experiential learning.

The Sloan Program in Health Administration’s Health Students Association (HSA) hosted its 5th Annual National Case Competition in collaboration with UCI Health, with generous support from Nate Shinagawa MHA, Chief Operating Officer of UCI Health.

40 graduate student teams from across the country competed in a multi-round challenge focused on strategic planning for UCI Health’s newly acquired hospitals. The final round was held at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange, California.

The competition was co-organized by Harsha Balakumar, UCI Administrative Fellow, and a team of current Sloan MHA students: Keshaav Krishnaa Pothapur, Tanyon Loose, Justin Herzfeld, Victor Wu, Shupti Biswas, Alex Hayre-Pérez, and Sophia Lee.

This year’s competition showcased the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, strategic innovation, and student leadership.

As one finalist noted: “It was incredible to present a current situation UCI was facing to healthcare executives and leaders and gain their feedback and insights. We left more prepared, more inspired, and more committed to shaping the future of healthcare.”

👋 Meet Executive MHA Student Laura Okafor 👋

“As a physician, you can't just take time off. It's not encouraged. But Cornell was unique because the online curriculum addressed every single area of my planned career that I needed to master to be the best that I could be. It has really empowered me. It has given me so much more confidence in myself and my skills. It has made me feel that I can do whatever I want to do.”

Laura Okafor MHA ‘21, was an attending physician for Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital when her mentor told her something that changed the trajectory of her career in health care: “Laura, you should be a leader by now.”

Okafor began taking classes online, and she soon discovered the Cornell Brooks Executive Master of Health Administration. Now, in addition to her role as a physician, she serves as Piedmont’s associate medical director. “Next to deciding that I wanted to work in healthcare,” says Okafor, “this is the best career decision I've ever made.”

The Cornell Brooks EMHA is the only hybrid CAHME-ranked Executive MHA program from an Ivy League institution. The degree equips experienced healthcare professionals with advanced leadership skills and cross-functional knowledge in key areas, including finance, operations, policy, and law.
