Ithaca College Documentary Journalism Workshop Spring 2021

This Ithaca College Documentary Journalism Workshop would like to invite you to join us on Friday, May 7th at 5pm for the premiere of this semester's final projects. We had 16 students produce eight projects with topics such as: the challenges faced by LGBTQ students during the pandemic, the challenges faced by journalists on the job, opening a business in the time of COVID, finding art in the midst of the shutdown, the Ithaca College Choir adapting to remote concerts, how to help the environment, African American women and their search for hair care in Tompkins County, and one journalist's quest to tell the story.

Hello! I’m reaching out in the hopes you could forward or spread the word about this event on Thursday night at 7pm ET to journalism majors and classes, as well as other interested students!

LIFE AS A PUBLIC RADIO JOURNALIST

This panel will feature four Ithaca College and WICB News alumni who have found careers reporting for public radio, and will be open to the public. It is intentioned to serve as an insight and networking opportunity for students interested in journalism for their career path who may want to go into radio or audio work.

This will include:

The Society of Professional Journalists invites you to a session with Kevin Negandhi from ESPN on Monday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Students will have a chance to hear from a professional sports journalist and participate in a live Q&A session. Kevin Negandhi is an anchor for the 6 p.m. ET SportsCenter. In 2017, he joined the ESPN on ABC College Football studio team. In addition to being a part of an Emmy nominated SportsCenter, Negandhi has hosted NFL Live, Baseball Tonight, Outside the Lines, College Football Live, NBA Tonight and the women’s NCAA basketball Final Four. Negandhi has also hosted the Special Olympics World Games since 2015. He has been a part of special projects that include co-hosting SportsCenter’s Veterans Day specials and in 2015, he was awarded the Team ESPN Disney Volunteer Commentator of the Year. Negandhi joined ESPN in 2006. Prior to ESPN, Negandhi worked as a sports director at WWSB-TV in Sarasota, FL. While working in Florida, he won three Associated Press awards — “Best Sports Cast” in 2004 and 2005 and “Best Breaking Sports News” in 2005. Prior to that, he was a sports director for KTVO-TV in Kirksville, Mo. (1998-99). Negandhi began his career as a college sports stringer at USA Today in 1995. A native of Phoenixville, Pa., he graduated from Temple University in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He was inducted in Temple’s School of Media and Communications Hall of Fame. Negandhi is the first Indian-American to serve on a national sports network.

The Park Center for Independent Media is hosting a panel discussion following the results of election 2020 on Wednesday, November 18, at 7–8:30 p.m. EST. This election yielded record turnout and confirmed the deep polarization among American voters. Our panelists will discuss voting trends, narrow margins in many states, and if the impacts of COVID-19, racial injustice, and the economic downturn affected electoral behavior. The evening will explore what lies ahead, from the January transition of power to key issues facing the American public.

Mobile and Social Media Journalism Classes Take On Live Election Day Coverage

On Election Day, students in Professor Anthony Adornato’s Mobile and Social Media Journalism course and Professor Chrissy Guest’s Live Event Production course will be provide live streaming coverage on Ithaca Week’s social media channels.

In total, there are 31 students producing the election coverage for Ithaca Week. Adornato’s students have been reporting about local issues and races while Guest’s students are coordinating the technical side of the live streams.

The live cut-ins will begin at 8:30 a.m. and can be viewed on Ithaca Week’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts.

IC Journalism's Kristen Gowdy ('16) is the Senior Manager for Digital Content at the Women's Sports Foundation. On Wednesday, October 14th, they're hosting the their Annual Salute to Women in Sports at 8PM ET.
