Humans of Dillingham: Keegan Webber
Keegan is a Theatre Production and Design major with a concentration in Lighting Design and Tech who is part of the crew for the upcoming show “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms.”

Putting on any show over a digital platform is challenging, but a show like “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” that has numerous fight scenes and a lot of character interaction is trickier to nail down. When asked what it’s like putting on a show digitally, and what challenges and opportunities arise, Keegan responded, “Working on a show in the virtual era is very different than working in person but it provides an awesome opportunity to learn new skills. In the design and production department we have been working with new technologies and software to bring our show into the virtual realm. The SKM (She Kills Monsters) production team has been hard at work creating a 3D virtual set complete with lighting and sound. Although working over zoom can be challenging at times it has provided a unique and worthwhile learning experience.”

Storytelling is a big part of theatre, and Keegan felt this story was important to share now because, “She Kills Monsters is an interesting story to be doing during a time like this. The shows focus on tragic loss, personal growth, and friendship really speaks to the time we are living in. During tough times in the world like this, stories like SKM (She Kills Monsters) can be incredibly uplifting and meaningful.”

Keegan shared with us, “The best part of being a Dillingham student is the close community. Everyone in Dillingham is welcoming and kind. Being part of a group of people who are so committed to learning, designing, building, acting, and working on intricate shows is awesome.”

Be sure to keep an eye out for the link to register for “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms,” showing on Saturday, December 5, 2020!

Emmy is a BA Theatre Studies major who co-directed Off the Palisades Parkway which premiered Saturday, November 7, 2020. In regards to why this show was put on now, Emmy responded, “I think having conversations about identity require tackling notions of race, sexuality, class, and self-worth, which affected me in high school 20-some years after the events of the play take place. Nick Malakhow described his play as a high school coming-of-age story for the characters that usually exist as tertiary figures to the events of a traditional Hollywood 'teen drama,' and I think it's important to allow these characters' their own complex stories.”

When asked what her favorite part of being a Dillingham student was, Emmy says that “the BA allows me to explore my interests outside of theatre. I created the backgrounds for OPP, and I know that being able to take art classes helps me combine my love of theatre and visual art.”

The world of Zoom has created a new barrier in the world of theatre. When it came to directing a show in this virtual realm, Emmy explained “reimagining the "stage" as 2D Zoom windows was extremely challenging. "There were a lot of things we couldn't do, like kisses and determining which Zoom video appeared where, which made my job as a director even harder. There were a lot of moments, like the item passing and smoking choreography that really fit the medium of Zoom well and wouldn't have felt as intimate on a stage. It's also hard forming an ensemble and sense of a connected cast through Zoom.”

We grieve the death of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, and the countless lives they represent. We stand in defiance of the systemic racism that plagues this country. It should not take violent loss of life for us to proclaim, realize, or understand that Black Lives Matter. We are a community, and we must take meaningful action. Today, and all days, we stand firmly beside our Black community members and artists. #BlackLivesMatter

I really appreciate this page for continuing to advocate for the arts. Especially in this time away from live entertainment, I’ve been on the lookout for new content online and wanted to share this new film that reminded me so much of live theatre. Originally released in 1993, “Ruby in Paradise” has been remastered for re-release, giving modern audiences a chance to see this indie classic. I’m so glad I took the time to watch it because I was truly blown away. Ashley Judd stars in her feature-film debut as Ruby, a young woman on a journey of personal growth that lands her in Panama City Beach, Florida. There was a stunning intimacy to her performance that really shines, and it even earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead after its initial release. “Ruby in Paradise” is a true character study, and it was exciting to see where Judd got her start in the industry and how she has evolved as an actress. As a creative, I found this to be a really inspiring watch and I wanted to share my experience, in hopes that it may speak to some of you as well. The film is available now on VOD platforms like iTunes, so definitely let me know what you think!

It has been 9 weeks since the @ICTA_BIPOC Collective letter was released. Since the letter’s release, we have been in action-based conversations with Dean Stein of H&S and Dr. Belisa Gonazalez, the Director of the Center for the Study of Culture Race and Ethnicity. Two EDI facilitators have been named for the IC’s Department of Theatre Arts, and on Friday, September 25th, we received Dean Stein’s and Dr. Gonzalez’s official response to Demands 1 & 2. Our October 1st deadline has officially been met. We see this as the first step to creating a truly equitable space for current and future BIPOC students at ICDTA. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the school of H&S and the Department of Theatre Arts. ICTA BIPOC

Good afternoon! Members of ICTA BIPOC, alumni and current students have written a letter to the Ithaca College Theatre Department faculty, administration, and higher-ups to address the legacy of racism in the department. Our collective has been inspired by the nationwide push to hold theatres and theatre programs accountable, and we have poured our hearts into this letter. We hope you will give it a read and follow our efforts to call in the parties responsible for the culture of white supremacy at the school.
Hey guys! I was thinking of doing some sort of video project to help raise awareness/support for the BLM movement. I was wondering if any African American students(former, current, or incoming) or faculty would be willing to be a part of the video in some way. Probably by means of a video interview of some kind. If you are interested, please reach out to me via messenger. You can also email me at [email protected]. Thanks!
