The Cornell Chinese Drama Society, "Jingyuan" (Chinese: 境缘剧社) was founded in the Fall of 2014 by a group of drama enthusiasts. Through staging regular performances, including our flagship production every semester, we are committed to promoting theatre drama in Chinese language at Cornell University, to providing performing arts entertainment for the Chinese-speaking community (including language learners), and to diversifying the multi-cultural performing arts scene at Cornell.

Angel Xu '17 as Li Bai and Jia Huo in The Insane Asylum Next Door to Heaven.

Come join us on Friday or Saturday 8pm at Risley Theatre. A work by Nick Yu, a leading playwright based in Shanghai, The Insane Asylum Next to Heaven plays with the concept of metatheatre and unfolds with surprising character developments. During the course of the play, you will meet 8 people in the asylum. They include a man who only communicates in ancient Chinese, a man who no one has spoken to since he was 7 years old, and a man that wants to kill lawyers. Eventually, these people are all released from the asylum, and back into the "real" world. That's when insanity and reality finally meet.Yu says that his play shows the mental and emotional challenges encountered in modern society - loneliness, cowardice, stress - and their psychological repercussions. Sounds like pretty heavy stuff, but he insists that the play is a comedy, though admitting that the laughter from the audience might have a sour tinge to it. he show is approximately two hours, performed in Mandarin with English subtitles.
