The "B" in L-I-B-R-A-R-Y stands for "belonging."

📷: One of the ways the library fosters an inclusive and diverse community, we partnered with Belonging at Cornell in 2019 on a public art photo session and exhibit at Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University, showcasing different meanings of "belonging" for students, faculty, and staff.

"Belonging means being immersed in inclusive environments that accept me regardless of background and allow me to thrive without interruption," said one Cornellian.

What does "belonging" mean for you?

A recipe for veal scallops in cream. A bus station ticket. A reading list. A drawing of a flower and a poem that reads:
“I feel chill at the
bone.
Spring come
do the peeping red
buds betray you?”

This a snapshot of the vibrant life of Robert Lynch, a Black gay Harvard-trained lawyer who returned to his small hometown of Enfield, North Carolina, to document the folk art and the lives of its Black and Indigenous communities.

He also chronicled his battle against HIV/AIDS before his death in 1989.

From the Robert Lynch papers, 7320, at the Human S*xuality Collection of Cornell University Library - Rare and Manuscript Collections.

"Beauty was not simply something to behold; it was something one could do."—Toni Morrison, in the afterword to The Bluest Eye

Happy 90th birthday, #ToniMorrison. Your legacy continues to inspire us.

📷 From Cornell graduate school's file on Chloe Wofford (Morrison's birth name), this photo was most likely an outtake from Morrison's Lorain High School yearbook photograph, circa 1945.
