History - The First Coast Women's Amateur was first held from 1990-2002 in St. Augustine, FL at the Ponce de Leon Golf Course. The championship attracted the best women golfers in the north Florida area including college players. Previous champions include such notables as: Laura Philo (Wake Forest), Shanna Nagy (Florida Southern), Julia Boros (Georgia), Brandi Miller (Miami), Erin Kurcsewski (Tennessee), Katie Quinney (Florida State), Jeanne Cho (Florida), and local mid-amateur standout Susie Fonde. The event was founded by long time Jacksonville area resident Mary Hafeman - a PGA Professional, former LPGA tour professional, UF Hall of Fame athlete and former Curtis Cup player. Unfortunately when the course was closed and then sold for development, Mary relocated and the tournament lapsed. Revival - In 2012, a group of competitive women golfers representing NFPGA, JWGA, EWGA, JAGA, and private clubs decided to revive the tournament to promote and support women's and junior girls' golf. In that vein, a senior and super senior divisions were added to the championship in addition to trophies to recognize the low scoring high school and collegiate competitors. The event is held either on a weekend to enable the working golfers to participate or weekdays depending on course availability. The newly revitalized event was held in June of 2013 at Deerwood Country Club with 40 players. The championship was won by local resident and University of Central Florida player, Kaitlyn Price, with a score of four under-par. Organization - The Tournament Committee of women focus on securing sponsors for the event, managing promotional media, and publicizing the event to attract players. With the goal of making the First Coast Women’s Amateur one of the premier amateur events in the area, we enlist sponsors to help defray the cost of greens & cart fees, trophies, tee gifts, etc. while keeping the entry fees reasonable to attract a broader scope of competitors. Additionally, there is an awards reception for the presentation of the trophies after play has concluded. The Jacksonville Area Golf Association (JAGA) agreed to help FCWA by providing the infrastructure such as their website for information, online-entry, and USGA rules officials, Two local LPGA/PGA professionals serve as starters and rules officials.
