Exciting news!!

Jacksonville State University and the Calhoun County Area Chamber and Visitors Center are partnering to provide educational opportunities to Chamber members.

Beginning in Fall 2021, the university will offer a 20 percent corporate tuition scholarship per semester to full-time and part-time employees of Chamber member organizations as well as employees of the Chamber itself. Application fees are also waived, providing an additional $35 in savings.

“I can’t tell you what this means to this area,” said Larry Deason, Board Chair of the Chamber, during a signing ceremony on March 10. “There are so many families struggling right now and this is such a big help.”

JSU President Don C. Killingsworth, Chair-Elect of the Chamber, said it is important for the university to be good community partners.

Learn more about this partnership with the Chamber at https://bit.ly/3cz5Pkn.

Please keep the Marker family in your thoughts and prayers.

Chris Marker, former head of the JSU Department of Applied Engineering, died on March 9th following a long illness. He was 49.

The news comes at a difficult time for Marker’s departmental colleagues, who are still grieving the loss of his predecessor - Terry Marbut - who passed in October.

“Chris was a talented manufacturing engineer who brought a wealth of experience to the Department of Applied Engineering,” said Dr. Dana Ingalsbe, current head of the department. “His mechanical design expertise was invaluable to countless students over the years as they prepared for successful careers in manufacturing engineering. Not only this, but Chris was a mentor and friend to many students and colleagues. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

To learn more about the contributions he made here at JSU visit https://bit.ly/3qDTaR0.

Celebrate Women’s History Month with us. ❤️

For 138 years, JSU women have been making history on campus and beyond. English instructor Eliza A. Bowen - one of the first women faculty hired when the institution began in 1883 - was a nationally known writer, still remembered for authoring a definitive astronomy textbook.

Student Heather Whitestone McCallum was crowned the first deaf Miss America in 1995. Dr. Roberta Watts, who became JSU’s first black faculty member in 1969 and first black dean in 1983, was also the first black nursing dean of a non-historically black university in Alabama.

Student-athlete Ashley Martin Cockrell became the first woman to score in an NCAA Division I American football game in 2001. And, of course, there’s JSU friend and former staff member Lilly Ledbetter, who had a piece of legislation bearing her name signed into law by President Obama in 2009.

Inspired by the contributions of these and other legendary JSU women, the campus will recognize Women’s History Month 2021 throughout March. Check out https://bit.ly/3r0dsoL, so you can mark your calendars to attend the exciting events organized by the Women's History Month Committee.

Alabama law enforcement personnel will now have access to better training in investigations following the establishment of the Alabama Investigator Academy. A partnership between the Center for Best Practices in Law Enforcement at Jacksonville State University and the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC), the program is the first of its kind in the state.

“I am pleased to support the new Alabama Investigator Academy and look forward to its contributions toward enhancing the effectiveness of criminal investigations and prosecutions within our state,” said Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, who visited the academy on its first day of classes at JSU’s Fort McClellan campus in Anniston on Feb. 23.

The state certified academy will provide law enforcement participants 80 hours of specialized training in investigations, covering topics such as crime scene procedures, death investigation, interviewing techniques, criminal law procedures, case file preparation and courtroom testimony. With the curriculum accredited by APOSTC, Alabama is now one of only two states providing a state certified training program in investigations.
