Breath = Life! Breathing is the most basic necessity for living, but millions suffer from breathing disorders that make this simple part of life very difficult. Do you want to learn to be the caregiver that helps those struggling to breathe feel better? That is what being a Respiratory Therapist is all about. Respiratory Therapists are specialized healthcare providers trained to help treat breathing disorders. Respiratory Therapists provide care for people of all ages. From newborns to the elderly, and every age in between, we help people breathe easier. The School of Health Professions and Wellness, Department of Respiratory Therapy at Jacksonville State University was started at the request of area Respiratory Directors. They need graduates trained to enter the clinical workforce. Our faculty are dedicated to providing a high quality, cost efficient program to train students to become competent, professional, advanced-level respiratory therapists.

Gamecocks, we have a few announcements for you:

1. Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, Jacksonville State University is instituting a two-week pause on all in-person student organization events effective immediately. Any in-person activity or event sponsored or endorsed by an organization, including those that occur on or off campus, is prohibited until September 9, 2020. Any organization that allegedly violates this directive will be referred to the Director of Community Standards and Student Ethics for disciplinary review. Jacksonville State University will review this decision prior to September 9, 2020 to determine if an extension is necessary. *This does not include in-person class meetings. Academics will continue as regularly scheduled*

2. Effective immediately, all JSU Housing visitation has been changed to Stage 3. Stage 3 means that visitation is limited to residents of the building only. If you have any questions, please contact your RA!

Our project, "Breathe EASIER", is a pilot program of remotely supervised pulmonary rehab via telehealth for clients with chronic lung disease. It is an interdisciplinary program involving students in nursing, respiratory therapy, and exercise science. It is the first of its' kind for our students and for the community. Client participants conduct weekly virtual nurse check-ins and participate in tailored strengthening exercises as well as education about managing their lung conditions. The overall aim of the program is to improve the quality of life and functional capacity of individuals with chronic, disabling lung disease who, at this time, are unable or have chosen not to participate in a traditional center-based pulmonary rehab program. Telehealth is a rapidly growing method of care delivery that, until now, has not been well studied in pulmonary rehabilitation.
Funding for “Breathe EASIER” is made possible by a Big Idea grant from the Longleaf Fund of the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama #JSUNursing #RMCCares

We are excited to announce that JSU’s campus will begin reopening on Monday, May 18, after operating remotely for nearly two months due to COVID-19. While some areas of campus will be phased back in between now and June 1, all student service areas and frontline offices will be open beginning on Monday.

When visiting campus, students and guests will be asked to maintain at least six feet of distance between themselves and others, use the hand sanitizer stations installed throughout the buildings, and wear a face mask when possible. Employees will also be following these guidelines. We encourage all of you to continue to practice good handwashing hygiene, cover your cough, and stay home if sick.
