Yesterday was a great day to be an AKA. We spent the morning Servin up Leadership with a side of Sisterhood at our annual Leadership Retreat and the finished the night off at the NAACP Gala where Judge Sharon Wilson, our sister, was honored. 💗💚

Reflections of service in June and July!

Sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc./Zeta Psi Omega Chapter and Zeta Pi Chapter have been very busy! A purpose-driven and rewarding Christ-work type of busy when we gave a very small portion of our summertime to a much larger and worthy cause/need -- Second Harvest Food Bank - Feeding South Louisiana serving the Calcasieu Parish Summer Feeding Program.

The mission entailed plating 415 meals DAILY (during a two-hour shift on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) and preparing an additional 315 bagged lunches on Thursdays for Friday for the feeding program's seven sites. Do the math! That was a whole lot of meals!
The Why: These healthy meals filled the gap for children 18 years of age and under from families facing food shortages especially during summers months of school closure.
Although the assignment also ties in with the sorority's anti-hunger initiative, accepting the challenge for many was a personal choice while enjoying a rewarding "win-win" payoff of "GIVING BACK". While the added bonus was our knowing this service made a substantial impact in the fight against hunger here at home.

As SH Committee Chair and project coordinator, I cannot say THANK YOU enough to these amazing individuals who served including Deborah Garriet, Ann Pitre, Toni Miles, Jennifer Shilow White, Michelle Daniel Evans, Dwaunis Broussard, Alice Wallace, Janet Madison Clemons, Kyandria Scott, Kimberly Jenkins Lewis, Janet Griffin, Christe Jena' Hester Pettis, Kaya Garriet, Twila Sterling-Guillory, Kayla Ned, Leah Johnson and Kaycie Kennison. Thanks to Frieda Perryman Rigmaiden, chapter president, for her support.

Whether you served a two-hour shift or up to approximately 30 hours (some served multiple shifts) -- your warmth, positivity, reliability, and productivity were valued and appreciated by me and the staff of Second Harvest Food Bank - Feeding South Louisiana .

The Summer Feeding Program ended on July 24, but the dynamic mission of Second Harvest continues. Second Harvest Food Bank - Feeding South Louisiana remains in dire need of Calcasieu Parish volunteers for other projects. Make a difference! Signup TODAY at no-hunger.org/volunteer

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Golden Soror Pythina “Pye” Brown, a treasured member of the Zeta Psi Omega Chapter.

Golden Soror Pye was a 61-year member of our chapter, serving faithfully in numerous leadership roles. Her wisdom, dedication, and unwavering commitment played a vital role in our chapter, and she exemplified extraordinary sisterly principles. In her honor, our chapter’s Soror of the Year Award proudly bears her name.

Affectionately known as the “recycled teenager,” a title she gave herself, Soror Pye brought energy and laughter to everything she did. She was always on the go, reminding us that joy is a form of service. Her youthful spirit and generous heart were a blessing to all who knew her.

Services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the location below. The Ivy Beyond the Wall service will begin at 10:15 am.
