UW Space Cowboys Official page of the University of Wyoming's Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP) team

We are a team of 8 undergraduate students at the University of Wyoming participating in the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP). Our team, sponsored by the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium, will be flying weather balloons and collecting atmospheric data before, during, and after the two upcoming solar eclipses in October 2023 and April 2024. The NEBP is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate Science Activation program, and NASA's Space Grant College and Fellowship program.

While our team was launching small weather balloons every hour, other teams with the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project launched one larger balloon just like this about an hour before totality to capture incredible 360-degree video footage from within the stratosphere. Wow!

Atmospheric sounding from our 04Z (midnight) launch in the rain. This type of graph is used extensively by meteorologists on a daily basis. Converging temperature and dewpoint lines show that the atmosphere was nearly saturated from the surface up to 300 mb, suggesting - to no surprise - rain! Slightly warmer air at lower levels hint at the approaching warm front later this morning.
