UK Markey Cancer Center researchers are uncovering how melanoma protects itself from both treatment and the immune system.

A new study identified the proteins ABL1 and ABL2 as key drivers that help melanoma cells resist targeted therapy while also creating an immune environment that helps the cancer survive. In preclinical models, researchers found that blocking these proteins with nilotinib disrupted cancer growth and survival signals and reduced the cancer’s ability to attract immune-suppressing cells, allowing T-cells to return.

The findings could open new possibilities for overcoming melanoma treatment resistance.

Essential oil sprays may kill cockroaches on contact, but new research from the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment suggests they offer little lasting control after they dry.

Researchers at UK tested commercial essential oil-based products against German cockroaches. While direct sprays killed more than 96% within seven days, most dried-residue treatments killed fewer than 10%.

The Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority (KNEDA) has issued a Request for Information for Kentucky’s Nuclear Reactor Site Readiness Pilot Program.

As part of its implementation responsibilities, KNEDA is requesting preliminary information from organizations that may be interested in participating in the program, including potential project timelines, partnerships, site readiness, workforce development needs, community engagement efforts and other factors that could influence future applications.

The program provides a framework through which the Kentucky General Assembly may award grants covering up to one-third of eligible costs associated with pursuing certain U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses and permits, with a maximum of $25 million per project.

Organizations interested in the program are encouraged to review the RFI and submit responses by Nov. 6. The RFI is intended to gather information and is not an application for grant funding.

Alexandra F. Paterson, a researcher with the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering, has been shortlisted for an international Nature Award recognizing inspiring women in science.

Paterson is one of just eight women worldwide selected for the 2026 Scientific Achievement shortlist and the only woman based in the United States. Her research at the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research focuses on flexible electronic devices made from organic, carbon-based materials, with potential applications ranging from wearable health sensors to low-energy computing and smart agricultural tools.

The winner will be announced Nov. 3 in London.

University of Kentucky College of Public Health researcher Brian W. Noehren, Ph.D., has received $4.6 million in new grants to advance research aimed at improving recovery from joint injuries and chronic pain.

The two studies focus on knee arthritis and ankle fractures, using approaches including rapid MRI scans and multidisciplinary rehabilitation research to develop more personalized treatments and help patients maintain long-term physical function.

By bringing together experts in muscle biology, biomechanics, physical therapy, orthopedic surgery and engineering, the research aims to improve health and quality of life for people across Kentucky and beyond.

A horticultural science senior in the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Shields was recognized as a 2026 Borlaug Scholar by the National Association for Plant Breeding for her work on developing disease-resistant strawberry varieties. Through undergraduate research at UK, she has grown into an independent researcher helping advance solutions that could benefit growers and consumers alike.

A UK College of Arts and Sciences researcher has earned national recognition for her work exploring one of biology's most fundamental building blocks.

Alexandra Long received the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award for research focused on the cytoskeleton and cilia, structures that help cells function properly and are linked to diseases including cancer, neurodegeneration, cystic fibrosis and polycystic kidney disease.

The award will support discoveries that deepen our understanding of how cells are built, maintained and remodeled, providing important insights into human health.

University of Kentucky researchers and students are helping shape the future of mining and energy innovation.

During a recent campus visit, U.S. Department of Energy leaders learned more about UK's nationally recognized mining engineering program, its Experimental Mine and groundbreaking research focused on critical minerals, automation, artificial intelligence and energy technologies.
