BSK Theological Seminary Affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and National Baptist Convention of America, Inc.

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky (BSK) is a learning community committed to spiritual, moral, intellectual, and practical formation in the Christian life. Students, faculty, staff, and members of our wider ecclesial community nurture personal faith:

- with gratitude for our Baptist history and heritage and an active commitment to a global and ecumenical vision of the Church;

- through honest intell

ectual engagement that reflects scholarly discipline, humility, and a tolerance for ambiguity and diversity in thought;

- by encouraging one another in the discernment of spiritual gifts and the development of pastoral imagination and skills; and

- by cultivating virtuous lives rooted in Christian habits and practices, such as reading together, eating together, praying together, gifting one another, learning together, confessing together, discerning together, serving together, and hoping together. In short, Baptist Seminary of Kentucky is a community learning to imagine together as we prepare men and women sensing God's leadership for life and ministry in faithful witness to Jesus Christ in the church and the world.

Did you know BSK students are spread across 19+ different states? This means community is formed across the miles in virtual classrooms. Students bring their own context to class discussion, taking part in theological education from where they live and serve. Because of this, commencement also looks a lot like a “homecoming” of sorts. You can see it in the smiles as our students (now alumni!) re-connected with one another a few weeks ago!

We’re so proud of Dorian!

This week we are celebrating our CBFVA seminary graduates. Dorian Medeiros is a graduate of , and has this to share:

What first led you to seminary?
What first led me to seminary was a transition in my role at church. My title changed from Children’s Director over the weekday school to Children’s Pastor, which also included leadership of the children’s ministry. As that shift happened, I felt a need to grow deeper in my understanding of ministry, theology, and pastoral care. I originally requested to attend seminary and planned to complete only a three course certificate. What began as a small educational step unexpectedly became a journey toward completing my master’s degree.

What is one lesson or experience from seminary that will stay with you?
The realization that we are all still learning. Ministry is not about having all the answers or presenting ourselves as people who have figured everything out. In fact, trying to have all the answers can limit our sense of wonder about God. Seminary taught me that faith often grows most deeply through curiosity, humility, and conversation. That experience reminded me that God is far bigger than our understanding and that there is beauty in continuing to learn throughout our lives and ministries.

Where do you sense God leading you next?
I sense God leading me toward providing deeper pastoral care, regardless of the context in which that happens. Throughout seminary, I have become increasingly aware of how much people long to feel seen, heard, and cared for in authentic ways. Whether in ministry with children, families, students, or adults, I feel drawn toward walking alongside people during moments of grief, uncertainty, healing, and growth. I do not know exactly what that will look like in the future, but I do know that God continues to call me toward compassion, presence, and listening. More than anything, I hope to be someone who reflects the love of Christ by creating spaces where people know they are valued, supported, and deeply loved by God.What snack fueled you through late night studying?White cheddar popcorn will always be my guilty pleasure but in the last month of capstone rewrites, a deeper appreciation for blue sweet tarts came into being. But, they must be the blue!

We are so proud of Becky!

This week we are celebrating our CBFVA seminary graduates! Becky Owen has graduated from this month, and shares some more of her experience here:

What is a small moment from seminary that still makes you laugh?
Every time either one of my cats would just up on my desk so I would pay attention to them.

What is one lesson or experience from seminary that will stay with you?
That I am more capable than I think I am.

If you could describe your seminary journey in three words, what would they be?
Reading, growth, confidence

"Biblical writers, as well as Jesus himself, frequently compared aspects of faith to objects in the physical world. In 'Memorable Mountains in Matthew,' Greg Earwood explores Jesus’s mountain experiences throughout the Gospel of Matthew and also uses mountain climbing as a metaphor for the faith journey. Jesus spent many long hours on mountains during his ministry. They represented places to draw apart from the crowd and commune with God, places to stand on a high vantage point and teach all who listened, places to heal the sick and hurt, and places to provide nourishment to the hungry."
