Michael Burton has been named director of Nebraska Innovation Studio, effective Aug. 17. Nebraska Innovation Studio, located on Nebraska Innovation Campus, is a community-oriented makerspace that serves as a hub for innovators, artists and entrepreneurs.

Burton, an artist, filmmaker, educator and creative technologist, succeeds long-time Innovation Studio director David Martin, who retired in July 2026. Burton previously served as an associate professor of art and digital fashion for the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He brings more than 16 years of experience working at the intersection of art, technology and hands-on making to the Innovation Studio team.

🎈 NEBRASKA LECTURE NEWS 🎈

Some of the mightiest mice in the world live in the high Andes mountains at heights once thought to be uninhabitable by mammals. University of Nebraska–Lincoln biologist Jay Storz is trying to determine how they do it.

Storz, George Holmes Professor in the School of Biological Sciences, will present the next Nebraska Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Nebraska Union’s Swanson Auditorium.

The title of Storz’s talk is “Life Ascending: Extreme Animals and Exploration in the High Andes.” A live webstream will be available on the Nebraska Lectures website.

The Office of Research and Innovation invites faculty to submit information for the 2025-26 Research and Creative Activity Report.

Faculty can submit at this site. The deadline is Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.

The annual report documents Nebraska faculty’s successes in research, creative endeavors and scholarship. This year’s compilation, which will be published online, covers the period between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. The purpose of the report is to provide a record of faculty achievements and highlight the depth and breadth of activities across all disciplines.

🦴 PREHISTORIC QUESTIONS 🦴

Thirty-five years on — well, 12 million technically — Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park continues to offer up important glimpses of prehistoric life in Nebraska.

Consider, for example, Borophaginae, known commonly as bone-crushing dogs. In recent years, researchers have found footprints believed to be from these carnivores amid the ash at the site. They also have found tooth marks that seem to match the dogs’ teeth in the bones of rhinos, horses and camels that died in the ash, said Sam Matson, the park’s superintendent.

Nebraska is leading a national effort to assess the health risks posed by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in the environment.

Resistant bacteria have long been associated with medical settings, but wastewater discharge and agricultural runoff into rivers and lakes are increasingly recognized as contributing to human exposure.

Activities such as swimming or fishing in contaminated water may pose a health risk, depending on a number of factors. This Husker-led project will identify those factors and develop a tool to help U.S. and global water managers and policymakers identify areas of concern.

The Office of Research and Innovation invites applications for its 2026-2027 Research Development Fellows Program. RDFP is an eight-month program designed to help University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty at the assistant-level rank position themselves for success in securing external funding for their research, scholarship and creative endeavors. Sept. 11 is the application deadline.

Up to 12 faculty will be selected to participate in the 2026-2027 program.
