Nebraska Agronomy and Horticulture This is the official page for the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. agronomy.unl.edu

The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture or its predecessors has been in existence at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln since 1910. The foundation of the current department arose with the integration of the Departments of Agronomy and Horticulture in 2001. Agronomy and Horticulture are integrative sciences, attracting students and scientists from a wide range of disciplines and interests. Plan

t geneticists, physiologists, ecologists, soil and water scientists, and landscape architects are well represented among the diverse ranks of our faculty. Growing plants for a purpose is a major driver of Nebraska's economy and in improving lifestyle quality for Nebraska citizens. Nowhere in Nebraska are more future professionals and lifelong learners educated in the plant and soil sciences than in UNL's Department of Agronomy & Horticulture. A degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Biology or Turfgrass & Landscape Management will open the doors to a wealth of careers: from plant molecular biology and breeding to farming and ornamental plant production; from crop consulting and rangeland management to landscape design and turfgrass management; from research and service positions with seed and agrochemical companies to greenhouse managers and careers in international agricultural development. Preparing students for these careers, conducting research to ensure sustainable local and global ecological development to feed and enrich the lives of a growing global population, and extending this information to end-users makes the Department of Agronomy & Horticulture an exciting place to study and work in the 21st century. Katherine Frels was interviewed on RFD-TV about the UNL Small Grains Breeding program earning the 2026 Miller's Choice Award. An experimental hard red winter wheat line, NE20620, received the award from the Wheat Quality Council. The award recognizes wheat that combines strong field performance with exceptional milling and baking quality, helping boost demand and marketability for Nebraska-grown wheat.

The variety is expected to be nominated for release in 2027.

🍠 Thinking about growing sweet potatoes this year?
Dana Freeman shares why Beauregard sweet potatoes are one of the best choices for northern gardeners. These vigorous vines grow quickly, provide excellent ground cover, and can produce a delicious harvest in just a few months.

Bonus: They help attract Japanese beetles away from other plants in the garden!

Ben Jewell envisions a future where Nebraska schools and other institutions could source 50% or more of their food locally. This would keep millions of dollars in the state economy and also provide fresher, healthier food to students and communities.

This type of thinking, along with years of hard work, led to Ben receiving this year’s Partner Award from the Center for Rural Affairs.

“Schools and farmers are both very busy and have a lot going on. They often don’t have time for some of the slower, relationship-building type of work, so that’s the role I try to play. I help facilitate those connections and help them understand where each side is coming from.” – Ben Jewell
