Billie O’Neel has been skating most of her life. Her first pair of roller skates were steel & they clamped onto her shoes. She wore them down to a nub. She spent a lot of time in the roller rink as a child, but when she discovered ice skating, O’Neel never looked back. She skated professionally, competitively, & just for fun. In 2018, she started to notice pain after leaving the ice that would persist for a few hours. Eventually, it would linger for days & weeks. She made an appointment with C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon & chair of UAMS Orthopaedics & president of the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons. She had one hip replacement in early 2020 & scheduled her second one January 2021.

Congratulations to Dr. Panna Bhattacharyya & ED Nurse Willa Wheeler, RN for being awarded the UAMS Comprehensive Stroke Center Time is Brain Award for the Fastest Door to Needle time in 2020! From arrival to medication administration was 26 minutes!
Ischemic strokes occur when there is a blockage of a blood vessel in the brain. The intravenous drug Alteplase can be given to dissolve the clot & improve blood flow if given quickly. Time is important because every minute someone is experiencing a stroke 1.9 million brain cells are lost. Immediate treatment can minimize the long-term effects of stroke & even prevent death.
UAMS has a highly trained stroke team standing by 24/7 ready to treat patients presenting with stroke. We are proud to honor Dr. Bhattacharyya & Willa Wheeler for their outstanding contributions to this team.
