Yesterday marked an incredible gathering of focus and resources with the creation of the Gibbs Foundation Endowment in the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The $4.5 million gift dedicated to crucial respiratory disease research marks a decade of partnership between the Gibbs Foundation and UofL researchers. We will continue in our shared commitment to lung research and improving patient care by pursuing bold ideas while supporting the work of future generations of students and scientists.

With the opening of the $25 million UofL Health - Brown Cancer Center at South Hospital, the University of Louisville and UofL Health aim to take on Kentucky’s standing as the state with the highest cancer death rate and provide better access to care for residents of rural communities.

We want to thank all our elected officials for the bipartisan support on this project, which brings together this cutting-edge facility and our new Center for Rural Cancer Education and Research. We believe that combination will result in a sharp decline in cancer deaths in our state.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded $11.6 million to UofL through a five-year Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (CoBRE) grant to increase research focused on nutrition and metabolic health.

Increasing our understanding of how nutrition and metabolism affect human health is essential to tackle the most pressing health challenges of our time. In addition to the federal funds, the university has committed $7.25 million to this broad and ambitious center. This endeavor promises to cultivate a cohort of future research leaders whose work will advance health and wellbeing in Kentucky and beyond for generations to come.

It was an honor to have Rep. Morgan McGarvey join our research team announcing this exciting next step. Thank you to our Cardinals and community leaders for their work moving Louisville and Kentucky forward together.

Yesterday’s town hall was an important opportunity to discuss where we are as a university and where we’re going. I’m proud of the work happening across UofL and remain focused on our mission and impact. Recently, my annual evaluation for the 2025–2026 fiscal year was completed by UofL’s Board of Trustees. The evaluation invited feedback from more than 1,400 members of the campus community — including trustees, senior leadership and a broad sample of faculty and staff. Capped off my trip through West Kentucky with a great visit to Murray State University. Our University of Louisville delegation met with Murray State University President Dr. Ron Patterson and members of his leadership team to explore how our institutions can partner for the benefit of West Kentucky and the Commonwealth as a whole.

We are stronger when we collaborate our efforts and cast a shared vision for the common good.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Family Scholar House Families and staff as they deal with these tragic events. Innocent lives lost and children left behind.

We want to thank our community for reaching out to support Family Scholar House participant families and staff as we grieve the loss of two of our participants, who were killed at our Louisville Scholar House campus this morning.

In 18 years of providing affordable housing, we have never experienced a violent tragedy on any of our campuses. But that history does not lessen the devastation of two young women losing their lives.

Two young children have lost their mothers — mothers who were working diligently to earn the education and credentials needed for meaningful healthcare careers that would allow them to give back to their community while providing a better life for their families. One was planning a career in forensic science; the other was pursuing a nursing career specializing in geriatric care.

Single parents come to Family Scholar House because they want a better life for themselves and their families. They come with dreams and goals, and with the support of our team and our educational partners, they work hard to achieve them.

Today’s tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the lives and futures represented by every family we serve. It also reminds us why Family Scholar House is so committed to helping student parents break the cycles of poverty and homelessness, create new cycles of success, and instill the value of education in their children.

Thank you for the many caring emails and calls checking on our families and our team. We are grateful for your concern and support.

Most of all, we ask that you please keep the children of our two participants, their families, and all of our Family Scholar House families in your prayers.

During the night, UofL Police responded to reports of shots fired at Family Scholar House, a UofL partnership organization at a non-university facility located near the edge of the university’s Belknap Campus.

Tragically, two people were killed in the incident. Neither of the individuals is a student or employee at UofL, and their identities will be released by law enforcement pending notification of their families.

This is a heartbreaking event for the entire Louisville community. Family Scholar House is a non-profit organization committed to helping student parents and their children — many of whom have previously experienced persistent poverty, unstable housing, and, often, domestic violence – achieve a fresh start through the transformative power of education. Our hearts go out to the residents of Scholar House and their loved ones as they grieve and attempt to process this horrific violence.

At this time, a suspect is not yet in custody. While we have no reason to believe there is a current threat to campus, the UofL community is asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior by calling UofL Police at (502) 852-6111.

Counseling is available at the UofL Counseling Center for students who may be affected or struggling to process this situation, and employees may receive support through the Employee Assistance Program.

As a reminder, all students, faculty, and staff are strongly encouraged to download the UofL SafeZone App to ensure they receive timely safety alerts. When notifications to shelter in place are issued, everyone should remain sheltered until an all-clear is given via official university channels. You can find more information about campus safety, including tips for staying safe, at the UofL Public Safety website.

We recognize that emergency situations are frightening. Our first priority is always to secure campus, gain accurate and complete information, and mitigate and eliminate any threats. As such, we may not be able to provide detailed information right away. We ask that the campus community strictly adhere to all directions issued by public safety officials until directed otherwise and to continue monitoring the SafeZone app and their university emails.
