Celebrating a Year of Impact: AAPS Student Chapter at UT Health Sciences

Highlights include community outreach, student‑led workshops, and co-hosting the College of Pharmacy’s first‑ever Research Showcase, uniting researchers across all three campuses.

The College was proud to host the 51st Annual MALTO Medicinal Chemistry & Pharmacognosy Meeting-in-Miniature from May 20-22 at our Memphis College of Pharmacy Building!

The event brought together professionals and students from six southern states for award presentations, inspiring podium talks, and fantastic networking opportunities.

This year's A. Nelson Voldeng Memorial Lecturer was Shaomeng Wang, PhD, from the University of Michigan. Dr. Wang is a globally recognized medicinal chemist and drug discovery leader whose research has advanced 10 compounds into clinical development, including Lisaftoclax, an approved therapy for CLL/SLL in China. With over 400 publications, 75 U.S. patents, and multiple prestigious honors, he continues to drive innovation in cancer therapeutics while mentoring the next generation of biomedical scientists.

Today, we were honored to host Gunda I. Georg, PhD, and the winner of the 2026 Duane D. Miller Lectureship. Dr. Georg is the Regents Professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota

We would also like to congratulate the 2026 Duane D. Miller Endowment Student Awardee, Kristiana Avad, PharmD, a graduate of the UT Health Sciences College of Pharmacy and a current PhD candidate in Krik Hevener, PhD, PharmD's lab.

Dr. Georg's presentation, "Discovery and development of a male pill by targeting the retinoid signaling pathway with YCT-529 for effective, reversible oral contraception," examined the discovery and development of the first-in-class selective retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARα) antagonist, including preclinical studies of YCT-529, as well as findings from the Phase 1 clinical trial.
