It's National Pharmacy Week (Oct. 18–24)! 🎉

This week, we're recognizing the pharmacists, technicians, residents, and students who show up every day for our patients and communities.

From counseling patients on new prescriptions to administering immunizations and leading medication therapy management, pharmacy professionals are among the most accessible healthcare providers around.

We're also celebrating the next generation; our pharmacy students are already making a difference through rotations, research, and community outreach.

Thank you to the educators, clinicians, researchers, and future pharmacists who advance patient care every day, behind the counter, in the clinic, in the classroom, and in the lab.

Big things are happening right next door!

Construction has officially begun on the new $350 million UT Health Science Center College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building, the Tennessee General Assembly's largest capital investment in higher education history, going up right beside our College of Pharmacy here on the Memphis campus.

The 300,000-square-foot facility will let the College of Medicine grow its class size from 175 to 250 students and double its Physician Assistant Program, helping train an estimated 1,450 additional health professionals over its first five years; a big step toward addressing Tennessee's projected shortage of 6,000 physicians by 2030.

Designed for interdisciplinary collaboration, it includes flexible classrooms, simulation labs, and a shared Interdisciplinary Commons for students across health professions, and we are excited for our student pharmacists to build connections with other medical professionals right next door.

Construction wraps up in 2029, with full occupancy in 2030.

We're looking forward to watching this building rise from our front door!

What began in a UT Health Sciences College of Pharmacy classroom grew into 40 years of public service and a lasting legacy at UT Health Sciences.

Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, a 1969 graduate of the College of Pharmacy, returned to campus last Thursday for the groundbreaking of the new College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building, where he was presented with the inaugural UT Alumni Association Champion in Service Award, a new honor recognizing UT graduates whose public service has made a lasting impact on higher education and the UT System.

“It took a vision and a special person to galvanize all the rest of us around this activity, and that person is indeed Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally,” said UT Health Sciences Chancellor Peter Buckley, MD. “He's had a remarkable impact and has been there right from the beginning in starting this project.”

The award celebrates Lt. Gov. McNally's longstanding support of education, students and UT Health Sciences, including his key role in securing state funding for the College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building, and caps a 40-year career in public service.

A PharmD candidate. A neuroscience PhD student. A pharmaceutical sciences PhD student. Three different disciplines, one published paper.

Congratulations to Dr. Jianxiong Jiang and his team on the publication of a new mini-review in Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, a leading journal in the field of pharmacology.

The manuscript, "Centanafadine (Simtriyo): a triple monoamine reuptake inhibitor for ADHD," was developed through the combined efforts of graduate and professional students, each contributing a distinct area of expertise:

Alyssia Antwania Pruitt, PharmD Candidate, Class of 2028, compiled the timeline of the drug's development, clinical use, and adverse effects.

Juqian (Amy) Han, Biomedical Sciences (Neuroscience Track), contributed expertise in monoamine neurotransmission and signaling.

Chenyao (Jacob) Jiang, PhD student in Pharmaceutical Sciences, provided medicinal chemistry perspectives and the drug's pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic profile.

Together, this team produced a timely and rigorous review of centanafadine, a newly FDA-approved, first-in-class therapy for ADHD in both adult and pediatric patients, and a strong example of how interdisciplinary collaboration between trainees from pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical sciences, and neuroscience can combine their respective strengths to produce scholarship suitable for publication in a high-impact journal.

Collaboration, research, and innovation go hand in hand at the UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy, reflecting the opportunities for Pharmaceutical Sciences and PharmD students to contribute directly to peer-reviewed scholarship alongside PhD researchers from different disciplines and faculty, well before graduation.

In what has become an annual tradition, our students, staff, and faculty gathered across all three campuses today for Pharm-ily Movie Day to watch "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"

Maybe next year Linus will finally see the Great Pumpkin. Until then — Happy Pharm-ily Movie Day, everyone!
