A great morning filled with new connections and possibilities! 💙🐯

The University of Memphis Institute on Disability (UMID) hosted its annual Transition and Resource Fair today, bringing high school students with disabilities together with employers and community organizations to explore opportunities for life after graduation.

Thank you to Shelby County Mayor Mickell M. Lowery for joining us and speaking with attendees, and to all our community partners and UMID colleagues for making it a great morning for students!

Students, faculty and staff came together today for the Pop-Up Fall Fest hosted by our Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL).

Congratulations to College of Education doctoral student DeTerrence Allen on his election to the Board of Directors for the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA)! 👏💙🐯

Allen, a student in our Applied Behavior Analysis doctoral program, will serve a three-year term supporting practitioners and helping strengthen the profession.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to be selected by peers and to serve the profession in this capacity,” Allen said.

Congratulations to College of Education alumna Makenzie Perkins, who was recently recognized by the Tennessee Department of Education as the Shelby County/Municipals finalist for Supervisor of the Year! 💙🐯

Perkins received the honor near the end of her public education career and recently transitioned from Collierville Schools to FedEx Freight, where she serves as Workplace Violence Prevention Manager.

An alumna of our Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research (CEPR), she earned her master’s degree in 2017 and a graduate certificate in Clinical Mental Health in 2020.

Today we recognize Dr. Keishana L. Barnes, assistant professor of Special Education, for her recent publication, “Developing Flow Theory for Black Girl Genius: A Conceptual Framework Grounded in DisCrit, Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, and Hip-Hop Pedagogy,” co-authored with Dr. William Hunter, professor in the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership.

The conceptual essay introduces Flow Theory for Black Girl Genius, a framework centered on the intellectual, cultural and neurodivergent ways twice exceptional Black girls make meaning in educational spaces.

It invites educators to reconsider practices often misread as misbehavior, such as rhythm, call and response, remix and improvisation, and recognize them as expressions of thinking, creativity and cultural knowledge.
