Jazz Center Slated for LEED Gold

Upon its opening in January 2013, the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco will be the first ground-up facility on the west coast dedicated to jazz performance and education. The new three-story, 35,000-square-foot building, slated to receive a LEED Gold rating, houses a flexible, state-of-the-art main theater for up to 750, an intimate 80-seat ensemble room, rehearsal rooms, and educational support spaces.

The design team worked to identify solutions to achieve a high-performing sustainable building that would compliment the stringent acoustical and lighting requirements of a performance hall.

The DO School: Green Store Challenge

The DO School offers a unique one-year educational program that enables talented young adults to launch their own social ventures. The program allows our Fellows to learn from passionate peers, engage with current leaders and experts, and create change by implementing these social ventures in their home countries.
The program takes place in two phases, the ten-week Incubation Phase on campus and the ten-month Implementation Phase in the Fellows’ home countries.

The upcoming Green Store Challenge is delivered in collaboration with the Swedish multinational retail-clothing company - H&M.

H&M will be challenging selected Fellows to create a Green Store prototype, which will be sustainable in terms of materials, construction, energy, operation and other aspects. The prototype should be scalable to H&M stores worldwide, be economically beneficial and make the idea of sustainability tangible for customers and employees.
Ssuccessful candidates may come from, but are not restricted to the fields of engineering, architecture, fashion and design, as well as environmental activism, retail and human resource management

For more info, please go to

The DO School is an innovative educational organization offering learning experiences that create real global impact.

At Industry Partner the Studio Shop this Thursday:
Artist Reception for Melinda Cootsona

Having painted for over 25 years, Melinda Cootsona focuses on abstract and figurative work, often combining elements of both. The artist draws inspiration from the Bay Area Figurative Movement of Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, vibrant and saturated with a keen sense of light. The unifying element in her paintings is a strong sense of color and composition. Using thick paint, Cootsona strives to convey mystery of place and human moments.

URGENT: from Suzanne Zurinaga, President of IDCC (Interior Design Coalition of California

The reauthorization bill SB 308 which will extend our CID title act will go to the Assembly floor this week. We need to show support for amendments to Sections 5800 and 5805 which will strengthen the law. We ask for your immediate help by writing and sending a letter to the legislator.

Two documents are below. The first is a sample letter; the second is detailed instructions on how to edit and send the letter. You will only need to do one letter, but it needs to be done as soon as possible. The bill will go to the Assembly floor this week.

Please communicate this time critical letter writing campaign information to your membership so we can show significant support to our legislators. Many thanks for taking action today. We apologize for the delay with this letter writing campaign; however we have been working diligently with stakeholders and the staff consultant to craft amended language which we had hoped to include.

Chair, Senate Business Professions & Economic Development Committee
State Capitol, Room 4061
Sacramento, CA 95814

RE: SB 308 (Lieu): Professions and Vocations; Certified Interior Designers (SUPPORT)

Dear Senator Lieu:

FIRM - I represent (FIRM NAME HERE). I work with a team of interior designers who are well versed in the California Building Code, Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, and Cal Green Code. I strongly support the extension of the interior design law outlined in SB 308, and support further important changes in law.

INTERIOR DESIGNER - I am a professional interior designer in the state of California, and support further strengthening of the existing California law to ensure uniform acceptance of the Certified Interior Design (CID) stamp across the state. I strongly support the extension of law in SB 308.

STUDENT - I am an interior design student attending [insert school name here]. My interior design degree will prepare me to enter my chosen career with a set of creative and technical skills. However, I am very concerned about my ability to use those skills to the fullest extent of my training and education. It is equally important to me, as well as to thousands of graduating interior design students in California who have a comprehensive education, to strengthen laws to ensure the acceptance and acknowledgement of Interior Design training and qualifications.

Uniform stamp/seal acceptance is the first of such changes. In order to ensure uniformity among local building officials regarding Certified Interior Design (CID) stamped plans for review and permitting, there must be an amendment in the Business and Professions Code and the Health and Safety Code that establishes uniform acceptance of such plans. It benefits California consumers by ensuring access for interior designers to work independently, as they are qualified to do, in non-structural, non-seismic code-based built environments.

We also support the inclusion of the Bagley-Keene Open Meetings act to require transparency in the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC). Increased transparency will go a long way in giving the public and the interior design community an interest and trust in CCIDC.

With these changes there would be greater assurance that interior Design professionals in California can practice to their fullest capabilities. These changes would allow interior designers the ability to legally practice interior design in California as recognized professionals.

Thank you for authoring SB 308 and your support for this critical issue. I reiterate my strong endorsement for strengthening the interior design profession.

Senator Ted Lieu
Members of the California Assembly
GV Ayers, Consultant, Senate Business Professions & Economic Development Committee
