Little bit of TheatreMSU history. Before McComas Hall was built, theatre was housed in George Hall and performed next door (and down a hill) at the YMCA building. They built their sets, costumes, etc and then had to transport them to the performance space. Wayne Durst called it “the only touring theatre company that never leaves town.”

Well, history repeats itself and here we are, packing up our show at McComas to move it a whole 1/4 mile to the MSU Amphitheater.

We love reclaiming this tradition for Commedia Robin Hood!

We are so happy to announce a new member of the Theatre MSU faculty. Matt Webb will be joining us in August as a clinical assistant professor in scenic and lighting design. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us. Please drop a welcome in the comments.

How did you get hooked into theatre?

At State. I had done a little bit of theatre in high school but certainly hadn’t committed; I doubt I even knew you could make a living at it. I tried out for Theatre MSU’s Student-Directed One-Acts at the end of first year, after meeting the family during A Streetcar Named Desire, and I was caught. And, of course, because of Dur and Jo – thanks, y’all.

What theatre experience taught you the most?

Each new story teaches me something, but I did help create a beautiful, heartbreaking production of The Journal of Ben Uchida that forever changed my perspective on both the Japanese internment and on the power and immediacy of works made specifically for young people.

What play should everyone read?

Anything by August Wilson. You can start with Fences if you’d like, but Gem of the Ocean is magnificent.

What is your dream production?

See above. Or, maybe a play for youth that no one’s made before.

What skill do you have that might surprise people?

Certainly not a skill, but I played high school football, which seems to surprise a lot of people for some reason…

What do you do when you aren't doing theatre?

It’ll be outside for sure (unless there’s football on...) Camping if I can, and hiking if I'm lucky. Oh, and I do love a good complicated board game.

What is the most rewarding thing about being involved with theatre?

Building communities through shared stories. I believe most in the marvelous power of theatre to bring people together, to let us share our experiences and perspectives live and face-to-face. Any time we get to help connect audiences to stories, and to each other, I celebrate. And, if we have the chance to do this with young people, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing theatre?

Huh?

Theatre MSU is so excited to announce a new addition to the faculty. Tonya Hays will be joining us in the fall as Assistant Professor of Theatre Performance and Theatre Coordinator. To help you get to know her, we asked some questions. Please take a moment to welcome her.

How did you get hooked in to theatre?
Doing a church play with my Dad when I was five. My mom helped me learn the lines as my reading skills were not super strong. I was off book before anyone and got in trouble for being frustrated with the adults for not knowing their lines.

What theatre experience taught you the most?
Portraying Joy in Shadowlands. It was thrilling to research the life of C. S. Lewis and the woman he loved. Theatrical job I learned the most form was serving as Stage Manager at the Beau Rivage Theatre for our Annual Dreams benefit for the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. It was incredible to work in this state of the art theatre with the entertainment crew.

What is your dream role?
An ensemble member of Come From Away, Bonnie, the SPCA character. This musical celebrates the best of humanity in a time of crisis.

What play should everyone read? -The Tempest - Shakespeare's Love Letter to Life.

What skill do you have that might surprise people?
I play the harp!

What do you do when you aren't doing theatre?
I love to hike and have actually climbed Kilimanjaro.

What is the most rewarding thing about being involved with theatre?
The most rewarding thing about theatre is the collaboration. It brings so many people together to create something. No other art form is as collaborative and the learning opportunities are in infinite!

What would you be doing if you weren't doing theatre?
If I didn't do theatre I would probably be a Jazz Musician. I love Jazz and the collaborative nature of the music.

Powerful work tonight everyone. Thanks.
All your shows look so amazing!! I wanted to share a recent trailer I just saw for the 80s film Chief Zabu. The film was in production for 30 years and is finally coming to VOD on August 7th. Chief Zabu tells the story about the exploitation of a Polynesian island by two New York realtors. I’m especially excited to see the work done by Allen Garfield and Zack Norman as their humor comes to life on screen. Let me know if you look into Chief Zabu and what you think!
Congratulations to all for a fun night. Jo and I enjoyed The Hobbit, great work everyone!
Does anyone have any good pictures of "The Tavern" from the early '80s?
Thanks for letting us watch last night. We enjoyed it, great work everyone!
Fantastic job! Thanks to cast and crew of Mermaid for a great job.
