Healthcare and essential workers are required to wear face masks for long hours each day resulting in their ears becoming sore and many experiencing headaches. P3 Student, Stepfanie Lam , saw this problem and collaborated with UCSD, UCLA , and University of California, Irvine students to create ear savers for our pharmacy students! If you’re a current UCSD SSPPS student, please contact your class president to claim your ear saver as a thank you for your contribution towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

With September just around the corner, we are very excited to introduce our incoming P1 class. As they make their transitions to SSPPS, P2 students Chelsea, Tristan, and Michelle share some quick tips and reflections from their first year in pharmacy school to pass on to the Class of 2024.

Chelsea Blaquera, P2 Student
What’s one piece of advice you would give to an incoming P1 student?

Just breathe and give yourself a break. You’ve already reached your goal of getting into pharmacy school! You are doing great!

Tristan Hankard, P2 Student
What’s one idea you would give to a P1 to destress?

P1 year can be stressful, but remember you aren’t experiencing it alone. Leaning into your cohort can be a great way to destress and make friendships over mutual struggles.

Michelle Chau, P2 student
What is your favorite memory during P1 year?

My favorite memories are late nights at the library. The support I felt with my class was unwavering and they truly have become my family away from home!

P3 Student pharmacist, Afrooz Sabouri shares her empowering story on being both a mother and student pharmacist at UCSD SSPPS!

How do you handle being a mother and a pharmacy student?

When I entered pharmacy school, I had an infant, so the first quarter at Skaggs was the toughest one for me. I am confident that it’s possible to be both a good mom and a great pharmacy student by planning ahead of time, being organized, developing a study regimen that works for you, and asking for help when you need it.

What are some challenges that you face and how do you prioritize your responsibilities as both a student and mother?

Planning ahead of time and being organized will save you a lot of time and keep you calm and out of stress. I have daily, weekly, and monthly plans that help me stay on top of my goals. It’s important to keep track of deadlines, prioritize coursework, and make sure you still have time to spend with your family while having some time for self-care. There are a lot of resources and people at school who know how to help you, please don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

Do you have any advice for mothers who are planning to apply to pharmacy school?

Develop a studying regimen that works for you. It is really important to ask people about their study tips and advice, but remember that we all learn in different ways and it’s really really important to come up with a study regimen that works for you. For example, I couldn’t write notes during classes, therefore I had to listen to most of my lectures at home on weekdays to complete my notes and use weekends to review and memorize them.
Finally, there were times that I felt so overwhelmed regardless of all of my efforts. If you feel overwhelmed, take a break, do something that makes you happy like listen to your favorite music, go for a run, watch a movie, and keep reminding yourself that “You are a superstar” and if anyone can do this, it’s YOU.

P3 Student Pharmacist, Sinhye Park, shares her journey and unique experiences that has helped prepare her to thrive at UCSD SSPPS!

“Prior to pharmacy school, I was in marketing for 5 years at a global company where I had the opportunity to travel to numerous countries and work with colleagues with diverse backgrounds. What I have learned from the multicultural environment is the power of diversity and the importance of inclusion. I experienced firsthand that we are all unique and no single person can be a complete representation of a certain group as everyone within a group also has gone through different experiences that have shaped who they are and what they value. By embracing the differences and uniqueness among us, we can foster continuous learning from one another and create attitudes of openness to change. As a student at Skaggs, I have strived to demonstrate my deep understanding of diversity when collaborating with classmates for a project or organizing an event. Additionally, I have sought to be a figure representing of a leader who creates an environment of inclusive behaviors where everyone feels welcomed to show who they are, express what they think, and share how they approach problems.I believe it led me to appreciate my own identity and value everyone at Skaggs for who they are and helped me thrive by learning from them everyday.” - Sinhye Park

During these trying times, it’s easy to get lost in the commotion while only worrying about those closest to us. Meet Stepfanie Lam (third-year student pharmacist at SSPPS) and her sister Stacy Lam (college senior at LMU), who recognized this issue and volunteered to go grocery shopping for an immunocompromised individual who was forced to move after her roommate contracted COVID-19. "It was a blessing to be able to provide for individuals who have been severely impacted and are unable to obtain essentials. We were grateful to be able to help." -Stacy & Stepfanie

P2 Student Pharmacist, Teressa Benbarka, shares her journey and interests in exploring and pursuing a career in pharmacy at UCSD SSPPS!

“When I was close to completing high school, my life underwent a number of drastic changes. I spent months caring for my mother, who had suddenly fallen very ill, and becoming painfully aware of the delicate nature of health care to where I felt very strongly about it, but my personal academic interests were in Medicinal Chemistry and in the great deal of questions I had about the management and workings of her medications. When I discovered the PharmD degree, I realized I had unearthed the only profession that combines exactly the science of what I feel drawn to—and need to know in order to achieve my goals—with the ability to actually be involved in patient care.

Staying focused in school, reaching out to find opportunities and mentors to guide me along the way, and constantly trying to reinforce the greater purpose of why I decided to pursue pharmacy in the first place were some steps I took to become a better candidate for pharmacy school. I searched for ways to better understand the profession by becoming involved in my undergraduate pre-pharmacy organization (shout out to UCR’s Future P.I.L.L.S. !). Through there, I also learned of Kaiser Permanente’s Apothecary Circle Program, of which I was fortunate to be a part of and gain work experience as an intern in different pharmacy settings.” - Teressa Benbarka

P2 Student Pharmacist, Tyler Sanders, shares his journey and interests in exploring and pursuing a career in pharmacy at UCSD SSPPS!

“Pharmacy was a field that I became interested in growing up in the city of New Orleans. I was fortunate to attend the well-known Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy’s summer programs. Xavier is known as one of the top universities for having graduates of color in the field of pharmacy. This is where my interest sprung. My interest also came from living in my hometown. The area of New Orleans has a history of people with hypertension and diabetes. Many don’t have access to insurance to pay for their medications. They also do not have many pharmacists of color who they can confide in to help them feel comfortable when talking about their health and medications. I want to help assist these patients with having that transparency and affording their medications.

The advice I would have for a student coming from out of state is to keep an open mind. Be patient with yourself. Enjoy the process and applaud yourself for making it this far.” - Tyler Sanders

Update: our student leaders have assisted over 200 Free Clinic patients and counting! #proud

Help us in recognizing the efforts of our CSHP-UCSD Student Chapter President, Hailey Hirata, who helped raise an additional $500 to provide patients with PPE supplies and food for meal deliveries to clinic patients in partnership with Monica Silwa and and her colleagues, created a network of volunteers who shop for non-English speaking elderly!

They have worked out a plan to purchase eggs, fruit, and chicken to be given to each patient seen at clinic under the supervision of Dr. Natalie Rodriguez and their advisor, Dr. Rabia Atayee.

Food deliveries are currently being conducted on a biweekly basis to ensure that patients at all three clinic sites, Downtown, Normal Heights, and Pacific Beach receive the food they need each week! In their first week, they provided 30 patients with meals in addition to $400 in gift cards. We are excited to continue to help aid more patients as the weeks go on with the support of the amazing
UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members!

“What I like about UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is the vibrant atmosphere for learning that has been created. It fosters good communication skills, written and oral as well as how to work in teams. These skills will be vital for future pharmacists to enhance patient health. My one piece of advice to pharmacists in training and new pharmacists is to be fearless in helping patients. Use your training in trouble shooting and problem solving to make everyone around you achieve the most that they can: patients, physicians, nurses, your colleagues and anyone else who needs the expert in managing medication therapy!”—Dr. Kenneth H. Schell, Pharm.D, R.Ph., CIPP, FASHP, FCSHP
