Students in Dr. Emily Garner’s graduate Biological Wastewater Treatment Engineering course visited the Moorefield/Hardy County Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Town of Romney Wastewater Treatment Plant to see classroom concepts in action.

The trip gave students a hands-on look at how engineering design, microbiology, and process control work together to keep West Virginia’s water clean.

Thank you to the staff at both facilities for sharing your expertise and supporting our future engineers!

Congratulations to our very own Austin Jarrell for placing first in the prestigious ASCE Region 4 DV Terrell Competition! His outstanding work in professional ethics earned top honors at the 2025 Spring Assembly in Indianapolis. We’re proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement and his continued leadership in the civil engineering community!

This week, our CE 479 students showcased their hard work and innovation during their capstone presentations! The project focused on designing and evaluating alternatives for a deteriorating bridge in Moundsville, WV. Working in six specialized groups—structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, environmental, roadway, and traffic control—students collaborated to determine the most viable solution. We’re proud to see our future engineers putting their skills into real-world applications!

Last Thursday, we held our annual Department Awards Ceremony and Banquet to honor the incredible accomplishments of the Class of 2025 in the Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. 🎓🌟

From student organization leaders and standout scholarship recipients to recipients of faculty awards, we celebrated the talent, leadership, and hard work that define our students. These awards recognize not just academic excellence, but the commitment to service, innovation, and collaboration that are the cornerstones of our community.

We are thrilled to announce that Kara Cunningham, one of our outstanding students, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 American Water Works Association (AWWA) Five Under 35 Outstanding Young Professional Award!

This prestigious award recognizes young professionals under the age of 35 who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication within the water industry. Kara’s passion for the water sector, along with her contributions to the AWWA community, have truly set her apart. From founding the WVU Student Chapter to launching the HydroLink networking event, and serving as Vice Chair of the Microbiological Contaminants Research Committee, Kara has continuously gone above and beyond to inspire her peers and advocate for the future of water.

We couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments and this well-deserved recognition!

Kara will be honored at the AWWA Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE) in Denver this June. Please join us in congratulating her on this incredible achievement!

We’re thrilled to share that Luke Brumback, a senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University, has been named one of the 2025 New Faces of Civil Engineering - College honorees by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)! Only 10 students nationwide receive this honor each year, and Luke’s dedication to engineering, leadership, and conservation has earned him a well-deserved spot on this prestigious list.

As the captain of WVU’s Steel Bridge Team and an active member of ASCE, Luke has grown into a leader in the civil engineering field. His passion for soil science and conservation stems from his upbringing on a farm, where he saw firsthand the impacts of erosion and ecological challenges. Now, he’s channeling that passion into a future career in civil engineering.

Luke’s journey through ASCE has shaped him into the engineer he is today, sharpening his communication, networking, and critical thinking skills. Join us in celebrating his incredible achievement!

We had the pleasure of hosting six bright students from Pineville Middle School and their dedicated science teacher as they toured our labs on campus! These incredible students are competing in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, where they've already won $12,000—with the potential to win up to $100,000 in prizes and science equipment for their school!

During their visit, they explored our labs, checked out our bioreactors, and even got to ride the PRT! We were thrilled to provide them with Geobacter to help strengthen their earth-powered batteries—an innovative project that could make a real impact.

Exciting progress for the FastFloor project at WVU’s Structures Laboratory! Dr. Onur Avci's team has received the steel delivery, moving into the next phase of research on full-bay laboratory floor specimen.

FastFloor is a collaborative research effort between West Virginia University, Northeastern University (lead), Johns Hopkins University, Virginia Tech, and Iowa State University—one of the largest structural steel industry consortiums dedicated to developing a sustainable, all-steel floor system that is efficient to fabricate and quick to erect.

A key focus? Floor vibrations, a critical factor in structural serviceability performance. Dr. Avci and his students have been conducting extensive experimental and analytical research to address this challenge. With experience from smaller modules, the larger specimen will provide deeper insights into the overall dynamic behavior of the floor assembly.

Earlier project phases at WVU also explored the acoustic serviceability of this innovative floor system. With this latest milestone, the team is one step closer to advancing the future of innovative floor design!

Allison Sims, a B.S. Civil Engineering student at WVU, had the incredible opportunity to attend the Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference last week! Selected by Dean Mago, she joined top minds to discuss “Beyond the Forecast: Exploring Extreme Weather in a Changing Climate.”

From networking with global peers to hearing insights from NASA and NOAA leaders, Allison gained invaluable knowledge about tackling the challenges of our changing climate.

Congrats, Allison, on representing WVU and making an impact! 👏

Congratulations to student Sarah Nelson, who won third place at the Ohio River Basin Alliance (ORBA) summit in Pittsburgh! Sarah’s poster, "Long-term water quality trends in the Monongahela River Basin," investigates statistical trends in acid mine drainage (AMD) in our local waterways—a vital area of study in West Virginia. Congratulations to Sarah for this outstanding accomplishment! 🥉

Leadership lessons from one of the best! Last Friday, Dr. W. Samuel Easterling, the James L. and Katherine S. Melsa Dean of Engineering at Iowa State University, gave an inspiring lecture to our CE 201 class. 🙌

Dr. Easterling has a remarkable career spanning decades in structural engineering. He earned his doctorate from Iowa State and his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Virginia University. He went on to join the faculty at Virginia Tech, where he became a renowned expert in structural steel design and led the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. 🏗️

With countless awards and contributions to organizations like the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Structural Engineering Institute, Dr. Easterling continues to lead the largest engineering college at ISU, inspiring the next generation of engineers! 🚀
