Fordham Law is proud to announce the launch of its new LGBTQ+ Litigation Clinic, under the direction of Clinical Associate Professor Deborah Lolai. It will represent marginalized LGBTQ+ clients in criminal and civil matters across legal disciplines and from trial to post-conviction, filling a gap in access to justice not often addressed in experiential legal education.

“I would love to see the clinic grow as much as possible and have a positive impact not on only the lives of our clients, but also in student learning and professional growth, giving them real experience working with LGBTQ+ clients, how to engage in best practices and trauma-informed lawyering, and maybe even influencing some students to consider career paths working with and in service of LGBTQ+ people and communities,” said Lolai, who joined the Fordham Law faculty this fall.

Meet Ariella Frank ’29 JD, whose journey from venture capital to Fordham Law reflects her evolving interests at the intersection of business and the law.

“Before law school, I worked at an early-stage venture capital firm and, during financing rounds, I worked closely with our attorneys on everything from negotiating terms to reviewing deal documents,” Frank said. “I found myself wanting to understand not just what decisions were being made, but why. I realized that practicing law would allow me to stay in the startup ecosystem I loved while developing a different set of skills and supporting founders and investors in a new capacity.”

Fordham Law School congratulates former faculty member Eduardo M. Peñalver on his inauguration as the 49th president of Georgetown University, the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution.

A member of the Fordham Law faculty from 2003 to 2006, Peñalver makes history as Georgetown’s second lay president and first Latino American president. The Fordham Law community extends its warmest congratulations on this historic milestone and offers best wishes for his continued success in higher education leadership.

From her early experiences attending social justice rallies in Puerto Rico, to her leadership as president of the Hispanic National Bar Association, Fordham Law graduate Rosevelie Márquez Morales ’02 JD has remained committed to civic engagement and advocacy.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, she reflects on her journey to becoming a lawyer, her work mentoring fellow attorneys, and the importance of building a supportive community for lawyers of color.

From funding scholarships, faculty-led centers, and supporting the new Dean’s Strategic Initiatives Fund, Fordham Law graduate David B. Anders ’94 JD’s generosity is making a transformative impact throughout the Law School.

“All these connections have made it so easy to give back because it’s not just the right thing to do—it’s easy to do when you have a school that is just so successful and good at making you feel connected,” Anders said. He previously led the Fordham Law Alumni Association and currently serves as a member of the Dean’s Planning Council that works closely with Dean Joseph Landau. “The word I use is a partner, and it’s been a partner in my career. And notwithstanding this word, I think I have a long way to go. And I plan to stay connected to the Law School for years and years to come.”

Fordham Law Professor Tanya K. Hernández has been selected by the New York City Commission on Racial Equity (NYC CORE) to serve as a lead reparations researcher for New York City’s historic Reparations, Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Mandate.

In this role, Hernández will join a team examining the historical and contemporary impacts of racial injustice in New York City and helping establish a research foundation for municipal reparations policy recommendations and reconciliation efforts.

“Today, we take an important step toward telling the full story of New York City,” said Linda Tigani, chair of NYC CORE. “Truth requires us to confront history honestly, healing requires us to listen to the communities most impacted, and reconciliation requires us to turn knowledge into meaningful action. This research represents an opportunity to deepen our understanding; honor lived experiences and help shape a more just future for all New Yorkers.”

Fordham Law School recently hosted Indiana University Maurer School of Law Professor Valena E. Beety for a book talk on her new publication, Pink Crime: Fighting Against the Criminalization of Motherhood, Pregnancy, and Q***r Identity. Moderated by Fordham Law Clinical Professor Deborah Lolai, the event explored how prosecutorial overreach, flawed forensic science, and cultural panic have converged to criminalize women and q***r people for their identity.

The talk was co-sponsored by Fordham Law School's Public Interest Resource Center, LGBTQ+ Litigation Clinic, Advocates for Trans* Law Students, If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice student chapter, OUTLaws, Domestic Violence Action Center, and Fordham Law Defenders.

Following recent national attention on Tennessee’s botched ex*****on of Christa Pike by lethal injection, Fordham Law Professor Deborah W. Denno was sought out for her scholarly perspective on the issue with numerous media outlets across the globe.

Denno is a leading expert on the death penalty and lethal injection and the founding director of the Neuroscience and Law Center, who has been cited in numerous medical journals and studies.
