When I grew up watching the news, I only saw a handful of black journalists really reaching out to its readers and viewers. Their voice wasn’t really heard, yet their presence made an everlasting imprint in my mind on how far I could reach my audience and use the new online technology to continue my love for news. I started The Pace Report out of frustration in the way news outfits are heading. As

a young African-American journalist, quite frankly I’m not seeing, reading, nor hearing the kinds of segments I produce or cover. What is missing from the mainstream news coverage are the basics: who, what, where, why and how. When I majored in broadcast media at the University of Memphis, my instructor Dr. Bob McDowell used to tell the class, “don’t spoon feed people the info.” A decade later, I realized what Dr. McDowell was talking about. Research, critical thinking, and analysis are what veteran journalists like Edward R. Rowan and Ed Bradley used to present when they graced the mic or television. The Pace Report is my journey back to the glory days of journalism, yet utilizing Twitter, i Tunes, Digg and the wonderful world of the internet. Without these tools and my passion for news, this wouldn’t be possible. As the medium has moved from television and print, to online and podcasts, the public can now access news anytime and anywhere with either a cell phone or i Pod. Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report.

Vocalist Ana Hoffman has a new view on how Black American Music needs to be presented and where it needs to go. She performs as The BLCK Madonna and not only is her stage presence and selections of songs she performs draws packed houses, Ana is a beautiful spirit inside and out. Her debut album "Between The Lines" is a reflection of how the traditional American songbook needs to revisioned as well received to new and younger music fans.

Ana who hails from Texas set out to become a pharmacist like her mother and father while in college but became bit by the music bug. She earned a scholarship in music performance and soon switched majors. It was there where she was exposed to jazz music and pursued the music as a career. After graduation Ana was casted in the national touring production of the Tony Award winning musical "Dream Girls" where she got her real footing as an actress and vocalist.

The BLCK Madonna just released her debut album "Between The Lines" at Aman Jazz Club in New York City recently to two sold out performances.

Ana sat down with Brian after her performance to discuss her new album, her Ghanian roots, and how she chooses to put her band together.

Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring saxophonist and composer Tivon Pennicott.

By way of Marietta, Georgia, saxophonist Tivon Pennicott has been on the frontlines as a leader as well as sideman who's played on three Grammy-award winning projects by vocalists Gregory Porter and Esperanza Spaulding. He's also toured and recorded with bassist Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, and Kenny Burrell.

As a leader he leads his quartet featuring Lex Korten on piano, Dean Torry on bass, and Kenn Salters on drums. Tivon's latest album "Roots to Branches" showcases his Jamaican heritage, featuring his his vocals and some outstanding musicians and compositions.

Tivon sat down with Brian to discuss his role as a composers and bandleader. he reflects on his saxophone hero Joshua Redman, and playing with some of the most important jazz musicians of this generation.

This year I wanted to profile a talent that represents the past, the present, and the future. Vocalist and actress Georgia Heers is not only prepared to release her debut album this summer, her talent is warm, generous, and passionate about relating to lineage of the elders while being relative to the music of her generation.
Raised in Greer, South Carolina, Georgia knew as a teenager that she was destined to become an entertainer.

After graduating high school she attended undergrad at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio where she was mentored by vocalist LaTanya Hall and jazz legends and instructors Dr. Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, and Billy Hart.

It was her moving to New York City where she earned her Masters in performance at the famed Julilard School.
Georgia's big break came when she played Ella in George Clooney's Broadway adaptation of "Goodnight and Good Luck".

She's been playing clubs around the world and was a grantee if Chamber Music America which helped her fund recording her first album which will be release later this summer.

In this special Woman's Month edition of The Pace Report, Georgia and Brian sit down live from Dizzy's to discuss her upcoming debut album, leading and fronting her own band, and reflect on her experience of performing on Broadway.

Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring drummer and composer Brandon Sanders.

Brandon's current Savant Records release "Lasting Impression" has been on the top of the jazz radio chart and received a lot a positive press from the international and national press. His third album and most progressive, "Lasting Impression" was produced by Willie Jones III and features Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and some of jazz music's accomplished leaders and sidemen in the business. Musicians Warren Wolf, Stacy Dillard, Eric Scott Reed, and Eric Wheeler.

The Kansas City born, Compton, California native is a social worker but has been in demand as a leader as his hit recordings have lead him to his real calling, music. It was Kansas City where his grandmother owned a jazz club and established Brandon's roots in music. While on college he played on the basketball team he eventually transferred to Berklee College of Music in Boston where after finishing school he moved to New York and became a sideman and eventually was mentored by drummer Lewis Nash. While in school he was classmates with vibraphonist Warren Wolf who's appeared on all three of his recordings.

In this edition of The Pace Report you'll see highlights of Brandon's official NYC "Lasting Impression" Record Release Performances at Dizzy's and The Jazz Club in NYC. The two sit down and discuss Brandon's Compton and Kansas City roots. how the music and his journey led him to this new album, and reflect on some of his musical influences.

Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring saxophonist and educator Nicole Glover.

Nicole Glover is one of the busiest musicians in the game right now. She's one of the featured musicians in ARTEMIS including pianist and musical director Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, bassist Noriko Ueda, and drummer Allison Miller. The power group recorded two-critically acclaimed albums "In Real Time" and "Arboresque" on Blue Note Records. In addition to her work in ARTEMIS she's also a member of Grammy-Award winning bassist and bandleader Christian McBride's Ursa Major.

The Portland, Oregon native also leads her own trio featuring Kayvon Gordon on drums and Tyrone Allen II on bass. Nicole's latest Savant Records release, "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" continues to be a staple on jazz radio charts across the country.
Over the last 10 years Nicole has played and recorded with the likes of Wynton Marsails, Joel Ross, Lenny White, Reggie Workman, George Colligan, Aaron Diehl, and Dee Dee Bridgewater.

In this edition of The Pace Report, Nicole performs music from her latest album at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning in Downtown Jamaica, Queens.

She reflects on her musical upbringing in Portland, Oregon, being mentored and studying under the great Harold Mabern, and playing and contributing to both ARTEMIS and Christian McBride's group.

Returning home for his current world tour, saxophonist and flutist Najee bless The City Winery for two sold out shows. His current album "Under The Moon Over The Sky" features guest performances from Regina Belle, Eric Roberson, Will Downing, and Chris Walker.

In a career spanning four decades, this multi-instrumentalist have sold millions of albums Worldwide and over the years collaborated with the likes of Sheila E, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Stanley Clarke, BeBe Winans, and Jeff Lorber.

Growing up in Queens Najee and his brother attended Dr. Billy Taylor's Jazzmoblie program while in his teens and was taught and mentored by NEA Jazz Masters Jimmy Heath and Frank Foster. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and studied under pianist Jaki Byard and George Russell. Najee got his break in music backing and touring with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and Soul legends Ben E. King and Chaka Khan.

In this interview Brian discuss Najee's deep Queens musical roots, reflects on some of his musical heroes, and discuss his current album "Under The Moon Over The Sky".

Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring author, composer, and tenor and soprano saxophonist Frank Catalano.

During a major car accident saxophonist Frank Catalano channeled and got rehabilitated via John Coltrane's music. His album "A Love Supreme" proved to a healing and turning point in his career. Frank cut off his middle finger but had to go through the daunting task of undergoing many surgeries and rehabilitation. This entire process became the "Love Supreme Collective" which was released on Ropeadope Records over ten years ago and on the top of the jazz charts for well over a year. This album he collaborated with Jimmy Chamberlin from the Smashing Pumpkins, Percy Jones of Brand X, Adam Benjamin from Kneebody, and Chris Poland from Megadeath.

In career spanning four decades Frank has recorded and toured with the likes of Von Freeman, Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, Charles Earland, Randy Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Betty Carter, Tito Puente, and Jimmy McGriff.

The documentary "Sugar Jazz" on Frank features stories and performances shot in his hometown of Chicago.

Frank recently play to a sold-out show at Groove in NYC and he and Brian sat down to reflect on John Coltrane, his highly successful books, and his mentors Von Freeman and Charles Earland.

Welcome to the first edition of The Pace Report of 2026.

Pianist and composer Jacky Terrasson for over three decades has been a prolific bandleader. In addition to playing with some jazz greats including Betty Carter, Javon Jackson, Cindy Blackman-Santana, Jimmy Scott, and Diahann Reeves, Terrasson has been an accomplished leader in his own right recording with the likes of Stéphane Belmondo, Michael Brecker, Mino Cinélu, Ugonna Okegwo, Leon Parker, Michel Portal, Adam Rodgers, and Cécile McLorin Salvant.

Jacky is a very good space both professionally and personally. His latest album, "Moving On", is on his own Earth Sounds record label and features the legendary Billy Hart and Grégoire Maret. He recently moved back to his hometown of Paris and got married.

He performed recently at the famed Dizzy's Jazz Club in New York City with his trio featuring Joe Dyson on drums, Luques Curtis on bass, and special guest Grégoire Maret on harmonica.

Brian and Jacky sat to discuss producing and releasing his album independently, reflect on the great Bruce Lundvall, and talk about his important musical influences.

Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report.

At this year's Jazzmobile jazz series at Marcus Garvey Park as part of the 2025 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, Grammy-award winning drummer and educator Terri Lyne Carrington and vocalist Christie Dashiell performed music from the critically acclaimed album, "We Insist 2025!". They paid honor to composer Max Roach and vocalist/writer Oscar Brown Jr.'s legendary album they recorded in the 1961. The music was reflection of Black Americans during upheaval of the civil rights movement.

Terri and Christie's revisioning of Max's music in lieu of his 100th birthday remains very relevant in 2025. The album features guest appearances from trombonist Julian Priester, and vocalist Lizz Wright. This album stays true to the message of change and resistance including spoken word performances including "Boom Chick".

In this edition of The Pace Report, Terri and Christie performed the music of "We Insist 2025!" for the first time at the 2025 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in conjunction with Jazzmobile featuring:

Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report.

In a career spanning some six decades, Tony Award winning actress and R&B vocalist Melba Moore has graced the stage, film, and concert halls all over the world. At 80 years young, Ms. Moore won a Tony Award for her critically acclaimed performance as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins in "Purlie." She also co-starred opposite Eartha Kitt in "Timbuktu!" and was in the iconic hit musical "Les Miserables." She's also a platinum award winning R&B recording artist with hits that include "This Is It," "You Stepped Into My Life," "Fallin'," and "Read My Lips."

This year she received the prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame spearheaded by comedian and actor Kat Williams this past summer.

Melba just release her memoir, "This Is It: Marvelous & Getting Better." Encouraged by her daughter, Ms. Moore gives a candid account of the highs and lows of her career. The book sheds light on her how she survived during the pandemic and how she's had to reinvent her career through musicals and playing new venues and musical programs.

Brian sat down with Melba at her memoir book release at the famed Sugar Bar in New York City.
