LaGuardia CC Summer Youth Employment Program - SYEP hosted a closing ceremony for its Project-Based Learning component, which serves 14 & 15 year-olds. Activities included a chess tournament, origami and other crafts. A showcase of focus area final projects included environmental and social justice-based constructions and posters as well as a fabulous dance performance. LaGuardia SYEP’s older youth participants, ages 16 - 21, will be completing their on-site summer work assignments in the coming days. Funded by NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, LaGuardia SYEP served more than 4,000 NYC youth in this 38th year of operation!

Saroar Firoj has advanced his with help from . Starting out with our Data Analytics and Data Science Program, Saroar learned to think more critically, improved his ability to interpret analytical results, and completed projects that deepened his understanding of how analytics can support real-world cybersecurity operations. He also enrolled in our Cybersecurity course, getting hands-on training and preparing for industry certification. Saroar earned LaGuardia certificates in both programs and is currently a Senior Business Systems Analyst at PNC Bank. Driven by a “passion for problem-solving and a desire to build a career where data guides meaningful decisions,” Saroar advises new students to practice consistently, stay curious, and ask questions!

Workforce Pell Grants are expanding access to federal financial aid for eligible short-term career training programs. 🎓

As one of NYC's workforce training providers, Continuing Education at LaGuardia offers dozens of career programs that could benefit from this change. President Kenneth Adams called it "a very strategic investment in vocational training" and said, "The potential is absolutely huge."

Congratulations to 174 students who have passed the exam and earned their high school equivalency credential this past academic year through our Adult Basic Skills program. To celebrate the accomplishment, they gathered with family, friends, alumni and staff at a recent ceremony. Many will continue their educational journey by enrolling in a degree program at LaGuardia Community College or professional training program with Continuing Education at LaGuardia.

This year’s winners of the CUNY-wide Peter Jennings Laurel Award Scholarship include four graduates of Continuing Education at LaGuardia’s Adult Basic Skills program. Armani Chancellor, Solomon Feldman, Yousuf Imtiaz and Carolina Lapiz demonstrated commitment to their education and persistence in the face of challenges in order to qualify for the award, which is given annually to a small group of students who have earned their high school equivalency certificate from a CUNY adult literacy/high school equivalency program and who plan to continue their education at a CUNY college. Armani, Solomon and Yousuf are currently enrolled in a degree program at LaGuardia Community College. Carolina, who was awarded the Peter Jennings Continuation Award, graduated from LaGuardia and is currently attending The City College of New York. The scholarship program, in its 23rd year, is named for Peter Jennings, renowned journalist and anchor of ABC World News Tonight, who was himself a high school dropout. Winners each receive $1,000 in scholarship funding towards their CUNY college education.

Justin Bourque had nursing on his mind when he started in Continuing Education at LaGuardia’s Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Program. His short-term goal was to get hands-on experience and earn important certifications such as , and before deciding what his next steps would be. Balancing the rigorous coursework with other life responsibilities was challenging, but Justin says, “it ended up being really rewarding once everything clicked.” He even earned the program’s “Vampire Award” for his skills in phlebotomy!

Justin is currently working as a at Tufts Medical Center in Massachusetts. There he supports healthcare providers and patients through intake, vitals assessment and day-to-day clinical care. He plans to continue building his experience in healthcare and return to school in order to advance his career, earn more money, and “make the world a better place.”

“The CCMA Program gave me the skills, confidence and direction I needed to move forward in healthcare,” says Justin.
