NYU's Office of the Dean for Science is thrilled to support Soapbox Science, a public outreach platform for promoting women and non-binary scientists and the science they do. On August 17th, Soapbox Science will transform Central Park into an arena for public learning and scientific debate.
They are seeking 12 female NYC-based researchers in all areas of STEM, from PhD students to Professors, to take part in this grassroots science outreach project and communicate their research to the public.

Why should you apply to be a Soapbox Science speaker?

⪼ Make valuable connections with other scientists
⪼ Engage with people who might not otherwise encounter science

🧠 We’re kicking off the first day of by putting meditation top of mind! 🧠

CAS is thrilled to take part in Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign started by the Dana Foundation to encourage the public to support brain science and be passionate about the wonders of the brain! This year, the event is March 13-19.

🤯 Each day on our account, we’ll be posting fascinating brain-health tips and insights that you can use in your everyday life!

⏲ Today, we’re shouting out the one-minute meditating for mindfulness.

Here’s how to do it:

↪ Find a comfortable, safe place to sit (could be just about anywhere!)
↪ Close your eyes and focus on the breaths you take, from inhaling to exhaling and everything in between
↪ Continue to focus on your breathing or do a body scan
↪ Even just one minute of mindful meditation can benefit cognitive functions like focussing, making decisions, or communicating by fostering a calm state of mind!

New York University will host New York Times science columnist Carl Zimmer for “The Darwin Beat: Reporting on Evolution in the Age of Pandemics,” its annual Darwin Lecture, on Mon., March 20, 4 p.m., at NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center for Arts and Science

Zimmer will discuss the evolution of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the Covid pandemic, and how its transformation has enabled it to continue wreaking havoc on the world’s health.

Zimmer, who has reported for the New York Times since 2004, is the author of 14 books about science, including Life’s Edge: The Search for What It Means to Be Alive, his latest. He has also written for Discover, where he served as an editor, and for National Geographic, Wired, and the Atlantic. In 2021, Zimmer was a member of the team at the New York Times that won the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zimmer, who has penned two textbooks, The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution and, co-authored with Doug Emlen, Evolution: Making Sense of Life, is an adjunct professor in the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University.
