The movement to change the age of criminal responsibilty in New York is being tackled by the Redefining Juvenile Justice Club (Chapter) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. This chapter was established, in collaboration with the New York Center for Juvenile Justice, in response to the broken juvenile justice system in New York State. Currently youth who are 16 and 17 are tried under the adult

court system and under the Juvenile Offender Act from 1978 youth as young as 13 can be tried as adults. New York is the only state, except for North Carolina which is in the midst of changing their law, to have the age of criminal responsibilty set at 16.
