Columbia Journalism School Reporting begins here. Columbia Journalism School trains students from across the world to become accomplished, high impact journalists. program.

We prepare our graduates to uncover important stories and explain complexities that the public must understand to navigate these challenging times. Our innovative programs have been honed for a century, providing students the foundation and opportunity not only to succeed, but to shape the future of journalism. Our degree programs, including a Master of Science degree, a Master of Arts degree and

a Ph.D. in Communications, are intensive, rigorous and demanding. The Master of Science degree is a 10-month program appropriate for students who are interested in developing and honing their skills in journalism, using words, data, images and sound. Using New York City as their laboratory, students in the M.S. program learn how to think critically and deeply, to be both ethical and street smart. The deadline to apply is December 15. The Master of Arts in Specialized Journalism is a 9-month program appropriate for students who already have the bedrock skills of the profession, but would like to develop expertise in one of four areas: Arts & Culture, Business, Politics & Global Affairs, or Science, Environment & Health. Students in this program generally have significant professional experience already, and are ready to go deeper in their work. They take courses at the Journalism School and in other departments at Columbia University, depending on their area of specialization. Columbia Journalism School and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science have created a dual-degree Master of Science in Journalism and Computer Science. Students will receive highly specialized training in the digital environment, enabling them to develop technical and editorial skills in all aspects of computer-supported news gathering and digital media production. The goal of the program is for its graduates to help redefine journalism in a fast-changing digital media environment. The deadline to apply is January 15. The Doctor of Philosophy degree gathers and focuses the resources of Columbia University on a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of communications. Students craft individual courses of study drawing upon the wide array of departments and divisions at the university. In addition to the School of Journalism, these include the departments of political science and sociology; the professional schools of business and law; and Teachers College. Four students are chosen each year for the Ph.D. Each chooses to concentrate in one of three areas of study: journalism and public life, social impact of media & economic, legal, and policy aspects of communication. 📰 Veterans make journalism stronger, bringing firsthand experience that helps newsrooms ask sharper questions and illuminate the people, systems and consequences behind military stories. That perspective filled Pulitzer Hall last week during the Military Veterans in Journalism 2026 New York City Convening.

Led by working journalists and CJS alumni who served, sessions explored documentary filmmaking, new reporting tools and the important role veterans play in covering national security, health care, disability and other critical beats.

Among the alumni contributing to the conversation were John Ismay, ’14 M.S., a U.S. Navy veteran and investigative reporter at The New York Times; Thomas Brennan, ’15 M.S., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and founder of The War Horse; and Josh Kaitan Lucas, ’18 M.S., a filmmaker and U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

🎙️ One of the best ways to learn how a story comes together is to ask the journalist who reported it. Yesterday, Scott Pelley began his CJS residency face-to-face with students, answering their questions and unpacking how his reporting from Sumy became a finished story on the rising civilian toll of the war in Ukraine.

Moderated by Dean of Academic Affairs Duy Linh Tu, ’99 M.S., the session gave students a close look at the reporting, writing and editorial decisions behind the piece, from what Pelley witnessed in the field to how the story was ultimately shaped for air.

Over the coming months, Pelley and fellow Journalist in Residence Sharyn Alfonsi will continue working closely with CJS students through lectures, class visits and hands-on sessions, including time in the Pulitzer Hall broadcast studio. 🌆 It was a standout week for CJS alumni at the 2026 (NABJ) National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair in Atlanta, August 12-16!

The program featured panels and reporting sessions with Wayne Dawkins, ‘80 M.S.; Rebekah Robinson, ‘22 M.S.; Martina Stewart, ‘07 M.S.; Rachael Johnson, ‘13 M.S.; Akoto Ofori-Atta, 2021 Sulzberger Fellow; Brandi Kellam, 2024 Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award winner and 2026 Spencer Education Fellow; and Tamia Fowlkes, ’23 M.S.

The convention also brought major honors for two CJS alumnae. Beatrice Peterson, ’14 M.S., was named NABJ’s 2026 Journalist of the Year, while Fowlkes received the Michael J. Feeney Emerging Journalist of the Year Award.

🌇 Columbia Journalism School was proud to join journalists from across the country at this year’s NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) conference in New Orleans!

marked CJS’s first skills session at the annual conference, with a workshop on vertical video storytelling featuring Juan Manuel Benítez, Philip S. Balboni Professor of Professional Practice of Local Journalism; Angie Hernandez, ’21 M.S., independent journalist and educator; and Olivia Rivarola Zommer of Factchequeado.

The CJS team connected with alumni and industry colleagues while sharing more about our degree programs and professional learning opportunities.

📑 Radhika Jones GSAS ‘08 is returning to Columbia, this time to the J-School classroom!

The former Vanity Fair editor-in-chief will join Columbia Journalism School’s adjunct faculty in spring 2027, teaching the Modern Magazine Sequence alongside Keith Gessen.

With experience leading Vanity Fair and holding senior editorial roles at The New York Times, TIME and The Paris Review, Jones will help students learn what makes magazines distinctive and where the form goes next.

🇫🇷 Congratulations to Professor Alexis Clark, ’02 M.S., who will join Reid Hall as a Faculty Visitor and conduct research at Columbia Global Centers l Paris in March 2027!

Clark will build on her work documenting the experiences of Black American World War II soldiers in France. During her visit, she will examine French archives and work with scholars to uncover new details about these overlooked stories.

On August 15, 24 students officially completed the M.S. Data Journalism and M.S. Documentary programs during our 2026 summer graduation ceremony.

They leave Pulitzer Hall ready to reveal the stories hidden in data and bring stories to screen.

“It is wonderful to fall in love with the people you meet, your favorite notebook, the topics you cover and with a vision of what’s ahead,” said Cleo Abram during her keynote address.

A group of incoming students recently stepped inside ABC World News Tonight with David Muir, met 2024 duPont-Columbia Award host David Muir and watched the outlet's live broadcast.

The Admissions team-led visit was available on a first-come, first-served basis and is one of the ways CJS opens doors for students to see reporting in action.
