Last night I made my Lighting Design debut at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts, Sarofim Hall in Houston, TX! Happy Opening Night to the cast, crew and creatives on Sister Act: The Musical at Theater Under The Stars Houston!
Quite the journey to this point in my career, something that I've been working on for a long time and a dream came true. My working relationship began with TUTS back in 2007 when I was the Assistant Lighting Designer to Associate LD Michael Jones and LD Don Holder on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. My role was documenting the followspot tracking for a very busy musical. A few years later I was introduced to Richard Winkler who was looking for an assistant on the Tommy Tune Awards show. We collaborated on many shows, the first full length was Camelot. And then Spamalot. A Chorus Line, Mary Poppins, Elf, Best Little Wh******se In Texas, A Christmas Story, and Million Dollar Quartet. In 2017 I assisted Steven Young and we together built a magnificent fireworks effect in a stunningly beautiful scene of In The Heights and illuminated some beautiful Mondrian style scenery on How To Succeed In Business Without Ever Trying. And a few weeks ago, I assisted Jason Lyons on Rock of Ages at TUTS.
A culmination of years of practice, patience and determination came together on this one and I could not have done it without everyone's support. As Deloris Van Cartier says in the finale, "THEATER IS BACK!!!!" Have a great run y'all, you're gonna be fabulous!
