When Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs - Baruch College MPA candidate Mona Bruno isn't managing media relations for the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) she's letting her creativity flourish by writing original short plays. 🎭

Bruno's passion for communications and storytelling will hit the stage this week with her original short play, Left of the Dial. Inspired by her own experience as a former college radio DJ, Left of the Dial follows a group of students working to preserve their radio station and the traditions that bring people together. 🤝

The play will be performed live at the 9th annual Not Forgotten Play Festival by the Women’s Playwrights Collective, in collaboration with the Staten Island Shakespearean Company, from August 20–23. 🎬

It's a chef's kiss for Thai food. 🇹🇭

Restaurateur Jennifer Saesue (BBA '08) was recently featured in Crain's New York Business's 40 Under 40 for her successful modern takes on Thai food in New York City. 🍽️

Inspired to bring authentic Thai food to the city, Saesue set out to create cuisine that tasted more like Thailand, leading her to open her own restaurant shortly after graduating from Baruch. While her initial venture failed, Saesue learned from the experience and tried again, opening Fish Cheeks, a seafood-focused Thai restaurant that earned acclaim from Forbes, The New York Times, and Eater NY.

Today, Saesue has expanded her ventures across NYC with Bangkok Supper Club, Bubs Bakery, and a second Fish Cheeks restaurant in Williamsburg.

Global brands are consistently looking for more ways to connect with consumers, and entrepreneur My Anh Phan (BBA ’28) (third from right) has a solution by leveraging the pop-up activations market. 💡

Phan founded Popped Up!, a centralized app where users can discover and get crowdsourced updates on the latest pop-up activations in their area. The venture won $30,000 in a single semester across the CUNY-wide Baruch CEO Pitch Competition, CUNY Clash Ideas Competition, and the Zahn Innovation Center Venture Incubator and Competition at The City College of New York for best startup pitch. With annual revenue from pop-up activations exceeding $80 billion and growing, Phan's solution arrives at a timely moment. 💼

“I couldn’t have done it without the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship and [Executive Director] Dr. Marlene Leekang," Phan said on her success. "Marlene has been a mentor, and I’m very grateful there’s a space like this on campus.” 💬

Throughout her Baruch journey, Sabrina Kippes (BA '26) was seen practically everywhere: on campus, subway ads, and of course, on The City University of New York and Baruch’s social media pages. 📸

Having participated in several student communities, clubs, and activities, Kippes found each experience led to a new one, with her most memorable experience as news anchor for the College's independently run student newspaper, The Ticker. 📝

As a recent grad of the Class of 2026, Kippes gives her parting words to future Bearcats. “Stay connected with your school’s community, get involved on campus, and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Some of the most meaningful friendships and experiences can come from simply saying “yes” and putting yourself out there,” Kippes said. 💬

As a native New Yorker, Karla Cordero (MPA '23) has often found herself driving change and giving back to her community. Now, she will apply her extensive background in city government to help shape the future of New York City Public Schools and its over 900,000 students as a newly appointed member of the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP).

Appointed by NYC Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Cordero and other members of the panel will work together to strengthen the City's public schools and ensure every student has access to a rigorous, welcoming, and safe education.

Cordero has served as Chief of Staff at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, where she guided the strategic direction and organizational change initiatives, and as Chief Operating Officer for the City of New York Government, where she developed policies and programs that served underserved communities across social services, sustainability, and economic development.
