As a medium produced in multiples, photography requires informed buyers who understand not only the works themselves, but also the market—and, most importantly, the right questions to ask before making a purchase.
Our New York-based, introductory 5-day Collecting Photography course is led by Alice Sachs Zimet, a pioneer who began collecting photography 40 years ago. Designed for both beginners and more seasoned collectors, the course covers every essential aspect of collecting photography.
Topics include the key questions to ask before spending a penny; the do’s and don’ts of navigating the market; how to buy at auction; where to shop (fairs, galleries, auctions, online platforms); and how to craft the character or theme of your collection.
Because building relationships is critical to success in this field, the program also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes visits to leading photography galleries. Students will meet with gallery dealers, museum curators, and Sotheby’s Global Head of Photography.
After only five days, this masterclass will equip students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate today’s photography market – whether buying from a gallery, auction, art fair or online platform and to jump right in.
Registration is open now for October 19 – 23, 2026: https://sothebysinstitute.com/courses/5-day-intensive/collecting-photography/
