Congratulations to Alice M., winner of the Term 2 Sotheby’s Summer Institute Photo Challenge!

The symmetry of this photo radiating from the center wooden pillar creates a kaleidoscopic feel, transforming the grandiose library into something almost psychedelic. The perspective emphasizes the height of the ceilings and the impressive volume of books contained in the library which, when combined with the frescoes on the ceiling, tells a story about the never-ending search for knowledge acquisition.

What happens when art meets dreams, folklore and science? 🧚🍄

In her 1974 work Dream Mapping, artist Susan Hiller transformed a fairy ring into the setting for a remarkable experiment in collective imagination. Participants in the conceptual work slept within a fairy ring for three consecutive nights and documented their dreams, creating a body of work that blurred the boundaries between art, ritual and scientific inquiry.

Rather than searching for definitive answers, Dream Mapping invites us to consider creativity, collaboration and the value of the process itself.

As a medium produced in multiples, photography requires informed buyers who understand not only the works themselves, but also the market—and, most importantly, the right questions to ask before making a purchase.

Our New York-based, introductory 5-day Collecting Photography course is led by Alice Sachs Zimet, a pioneer who began collecting photography 40 years ago. Designed for both beginners and more seasoned collectors, the course covers every essential aspect of collecting photography.

Topics include the key questions to ask before spending a penny; the do’s and don’ts of navigating the market; how to buy at auction; where to shop (fairs, galleries, auctions, online platforms); and how to craft the character or theme of your collection.

Because building relationships is critical to success in this field, the program also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes visits to leading photography galleries. Students will meet with gallery dealers, museum curators, and Sotheby’s Global Head of Photography.

After only five days, this masterclass will equip students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate today’s photography market – whether buying from a gallery, auction, art fair or online platform and to jump right in.

Registration is open now for October 19 – 23, 2026: https://sothebysinstitute.com/courses/5-day-intensive/collecting-photography/

"The Handbag Authentication course in London was incredibly insightful and engaging. I don't think I'll ever look at a pre-owned handbag the same way again, and the next time I purchase a new piece, I will certainly be inspecting every single inch of it! For anyone passionate about buying, selling, or investing in luxury bags, this course is an absolute must to elevate your knowledge and expertise." — Katia Graytok, Sotheby’s Institute Handbag Authentication course student

From the meticulous stitches of a Hermès Birkin to the timeless elegance of Chanel’s 2.55, our Handbag Authentication course explores how to distinguish genuine craftsmanship from imitation through hands-on analysis and close examination of materials, hardware, and brand codes.

Interactive lectures and practical workshops are complemented by exclusive visits to leading dealers in Knightsbridge, the museums, and auction houses, offering direct insight into how authenticity and provenance impact value in the secondary market.

The next course runs from November 30 – December 4, 2026 in London. Tap here to register: https://sothebysinstitute.com/courses/5-day-intensive/handbag-authentication/
