Black History Month may be coming to a close, but we are celebrating Black artists and the enormous role they have played in shaping Columbia University and the arts industry year round. We have compiled some resources to help guide this: bit.ly/IACBHM If there are links you think we should add, please let us know!

We would also like to highlight the artistic pursuits of Black artists in the SOA on our social media platforms. If you have work you would like to be included, please email us at [email protected] with a sharable link to the piece and your preferred caption for the post.

We commit to consistently and transparently reevaluating our programming as well as our internal structures and practices to ensure we are best serving every member of our community. We invite all artists to reflect on their current practices and biases, and commit to antiracism personally and institutionally.

Black Lives Matter.

On behalf of the Office of Public Programs and Engagement!

THURSDAY, FEB 25 @ 6:30pm EST

Join us for a sreening and discussion of the film 'Tote/Abuelo/Grandfather,' a deeply personal documentary debuting the talents of Tzotzil filmmaker María Sojob.

The feature documents the unexpected encounter between an old man, who is going blind, and his granddaughter, who has a limited memory of her childhood. As the grandfather weaves a traditional hat, the threads of family history are untangled. Between the silences, it becomes possible to understand the meaning of love in Tzotzil.

The discussion will be introduced by Ron Gregg (Professor of Film and Media Studies), and held between Marίa Sojob, writer and director of the film Tote/Abuelo/Grandfather, Smithsonian film curator Amalia Córdova, and Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Sebastián Díaz. This film is presented as part of the Smithsonian Mother Tongue Film Festival.

Register here to reserve your tickets and receive a code to screen the film in advance: https://arts.columbia.edu/events/toteabuelograndfather
