On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced an unimaginable tragedy.
25 years later, September 11 remains a defining moment in our nation’s history—and a reminder of the importance of standing together in the face of hatred, protecting one another, and strengthening the values that bind us as Americans.
For Senator Joseph Lieberman, z”l, namesake of our Center, the tragedy of 9/11 deepened his lifelong commitment to national security and protecting the American people. In its aftermath, he was pivotal in the effort to establish the Department of Homeland Security, helped establish the 9/11 Commission, and worked to strengthen our nation’s intelligence and counterterrorism capabilities.
“Senator Lieberman believed that protecting the American people must be a shared national priority,” shares Dr. Sharon Poczter, Founding Director of the Lieberman-Mitzner Center for Public Service and Advocacy. “As we mark this 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we remember the thousands of innocent lives lost, the families who continue to carry that loss, and the countless first responders and heroes who answered the call that day. At the Lieberman-Mitzner Center, we honor Senator Lieberman’s legacy by preparing the next generation to serve, lead, and strengthen our country. We carry forward his belief that public service is a responsibility—and that the work of building a safer, stronger United States never ends. We remember. We reflect. And we will never forget.”
