Ever wondered what's growing beneath the surface of Delaware's rivers, bays, ponds, streams and ditches? Well, there may be submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), and we need your help to find it!

Several hands-on training events are happening this summer to help recruit SAV seekers—community scientists helping to monitor the underwater grasses that sustain our waterways. Check out the dates below to learn more and register:

“A community’s resilience depends in part on how well the community regains functions and quality of life essentials, including housing and food, after a disaster," says DESG coastal hazards specialist Danielle Swallow. "If they can do things now to help them regain those important functions sooner, it’s less time they will spend after the disaster finding stable housing for displaced residents and getting back to jobs and normal activities."

The Delaware State Housing Authority is partnering with the University of Delaware’s Sea Grant program to offer free disaster housing recovery and resiliency planning workshops for municipalities across Delaware.

Our hatchery team has been hard at work producing hard clams before our oysters are ready to spawn, with roughly a hundred thousand larvae growing!

Featured here are Post-Doctoral Researcher Dr. Calum Pritchard, PhD candidate Dan Millea and Lead Lab Technician Rileigh Hudock working to trigger spawning in our adult broodstock.

Brittany Haywood, coastal ecology specialist for Delaware Sea Grant, received the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Region Early Career Achievement Award at the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Regional Meeting held at the end of April in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Haywood says receiving the award was “completely unexpected. The work around submerged aquatic vegetation and derelict crab pots has always been about bringing people together to solve real coastal challenges, so it’s incredibly meaningful to have those efforts recognized by the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant community.”
