The final bill of the Queen Candis Act, Dawann's Law (HB392) focuses on sickle cell and cancer education. It requires sickle cell screening and treatment programs in Virginia to include educational resources for healthcare providers on the increased risks for certain cancers among individuals with sickle cell disease or the sickle cell trait.

“Dawann was a proud Monarch alumnus, but he was much more than just a graduate,” said Old Dominion University President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. “He brought a genuine commitment to bettering the lives of others, leaving an indelible mark on so many that were touched by his soul as well as his spirit. Dawann truly embodied what we teach at Old Dominion University; that education isn't just about earning a degree; it's about discovering your purpose and having the courage to pursue it. And he certainly did that.”

Some lessons are cuter than others.

Physical therapy doctoral and speech-language pathology master's students got some hands-on experience with their tiniest teachers during Baby Lab, hosted by the D.P.T. program and the Faschini Wallach Center for Restorative Therapies.

Through supervised play and activities with infants, students learned more about typical infant development and gained experience they can carry into their future work with children and families.

A big thank you to the babies (and their grown-ups!) who helped make this learning experience possible.
