The Knowledge and Creativity Expo is just ONE WEEK away!

Today we continue our Student Spotlight Series for the Expo with Zashayrah Z. Iglesias.

Zashayrah’s presentation, Medical Devices in the Dance World, features research into the relationships between disability and dance education.

Zashayrah says, “Using my own lived experiences and interviews with experts in adaptive dance education, I show that anyone can be a dancer and that the “standards” or “criteria” gatekeepers use to decide who can be a dancer need to be rethought and reorganized. Ultimately, this research shows that inclusiveness in the dance world is important, not only for disabled communities but also, and especially, for non-disabled people.”

Head to our bio for the link for more information about Zashayrah’s project being presented at the Knowledge and Creativity Expo on April 22 from 1pm to 2pm in the Big Blue Room of Chartway Arena.

Check back for our next spotlight tomorrow!

📌Mark your calendars for April 22 from 1pm to 2pm when ODU Dance is featured in the Knowledge and Creativity Expo in the Big Blue Room of Chartway Arena. This is a wonderful chance to witness the research that dancers conduct and to learn about the creative and critical thinking that takes place in dance studios and classrooms at ODU.

We have seven undergraduate students in the dance program that will be presenting research: Devontay Davis, Stella Flynn, Makayla Jones, Zashayrah Z. Iglesias, Clara B. Minkewicz, Autumn Rodriguez and Jahla M. Smith.

We are excited to feature each of them in our student spotlight posts leading up to event day!

First up is Clara Minkewicz. Clara’s abstract, The Barre: Comparative Pedagogies in Early Ballet Education, examines different teaching methodologies that are used to train young ballet dancers.

Clara says, “I explore the differences between play-based dance pedagogy and traditional ballet teaching methodologies. Drawing from my own teaching experiences as well as published scholarship on play-based instruction, I examine how these methods encourage creativity, improvisation, and collaboration. I then contrast these approaches with traditional ballet pedagogies that emphasize technical instruction and ideal outcomes.”

For the full abstract description, click Clara’s link to her project on the Knowledge and Creativity Expo web page with link in our bio.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the reveal of our next spotlight.

If you caught ODURep’s production of the musical “String” last fall, or its spring staging of “Charlotte’s Web,” you saw examples of Ginny Vrolyk’s glowing artistic vision. Not that you would have been conscious of it. As lighting designer for those shows, this Old Dominion University ...
