Here are 5 facts about Black History Month:

1) It began as Black History Week in 1926, established by historian Carter G. Woodson, who chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12) and Frederick Douglass (Feb 14).

2) In 1976, during the nation's bicentennial, the week-long celebration was officially expanded to a month by President Ford.

3) While the U.S. and Canada celebrate in February, other countries like the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands observe it in October, and Brazil celebrates Black Consciousness Day in November.

4) It highlights significant achievements, such as Hattie McDaniel being the first Black person to win an Oscar (1940) or the Harlem Hellfighters' service in WWI.

5) The month also sheds light on overlooked history, like Seneca Village, a thriving Black community in what became NYC's Central Park before being displaced.
