Smith College Swimming & Diving

Smith College Swimming & Diving Home of the Wild Bunch!

The Smith swimming & diving program aims to provide an opportunity, through training and competition, for team members to set and achieve challenging goals. Camaraderie, team spirit and enjoyable participation are stressed, as is working hard toward individual and team goals. Individual as well as team development is stressed. Each athlete follows a personalized training program that challenges her to reach beyond her perceived limits. Swimmers receive varied and challenging workouts for their specific events; training to improve strength and flexibility, practice in goal-setting and mental preparation for competition, and videotape analysis of their performance. Divers also benefit from strength and flexibility training, mental rehearsal and visualization exercises, the use of a trampoline equipped with a training rig and videtape analysis of their style. In the past 30 years, the team has become known for excelling against tough competition. It has finished in the top 10 at Division III NCAA nationals five times. Smith swimmers and divers have earned more than 140 All-American honors and have included four national champions.

Last but not least, here's senior Elly Stone! (And her dog, Milo)

Hometown: Westborough, MA
Major: Biology major, Spanish minor
Favorite dive: Any dive that is not a reverse.
Favorite pump up song: Seize the Day from Newsies
Favorite quote: "Stuff happens and then it goes away." -Kim Bierwert / "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -Henry David Thoreau
Best memory: My first year, the divers were stretching the practice before Wilds vs. Bunches and Kim was setting up and testing the sound equipment. He brings over the microphone and says "Ok now sing the national anthem" and takes turns pointing the mic at each of us indicating who should sing. Of course, we are phenomenally good at singing and hit every note perfectly. We get through the first verse ok, but at the second verse, the high pressure of performing live got to one of the other divers who changed the order of some words for a truly iconic moment. She sang "Whose broad stars and bright stripes" and that on top of our fantastic aquapella performance had me dying laughing. It is moments like this one that make me truly grateful to be a part of this team.

Rock on Abby Bergman '18! She completed the 21 mile English Channel swim today in 13 hours, 15 minutes. She is the seventh Smithie to do it.

Here's a report from Abby:

- There was a strong current and choppy water.
- The Channel was a refreshing 64 degrees.
- Lots of jellyfish and several stings.
- She ate every 30 minutes; the captain gave her chocolate toward the end for extra energy.
- Retired Smith swim coach Kim Bierwert never took his eyes off of her.
- Paige Christie '15 swam into shore with her at the very end for moral support.

"It hasnโ€™t sunk in yet that I did it. Itโ€™s crazy to accomplish something Iโ€™ve been dreaming of for so long that it will take a while for this one to sink in," said Abby.
