HCI and the NCCC are proud to continue the important work of supporting college-enrolled student parents by providing supports to ensure they can complete their degrees. At the NCCC, these include free childcare during classes, an on-site lactation pod, and the flexibility to work with students to meet their individual needs. HCI is grateful for the continued support from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and Minnesota Department of Health, and the $93,000 Student Parent Support Initiative Grant that will allow us to support student parents for another year to come.

Rice County Public Health recently shared a few success stories from the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) program and featured the new lactation pod at the NCCC: Northfield Community College Collaborative!

With funding from SHIP and two HCI grants, the NCCC purchased and installed a lactation pod on the second floor of the Northfield Community Resource Center. The pod provides a safe, private place for students, employees, community members, and visitors to the NCRC to nurse or pump. "This private, easy-to-use space has helped new moms stay in school while caring for their babies. It gives them a safe and comfortable place to nurse or pump, so they can keep working toward their degree,” said Laura Hakala, NCCC Student Services Coordinator.

After graduating high school in 2015 and taking time away from school to focus on raising his family, Andres returned to continue his education in 2022. He graduated with an associate of science degree from Riverland Community College this May and is currently pursuing his goal of becoming an A&P engineer.

"Being able to return to school while still showing up for my children made a huge difference and helped me stay motivated to finish. The support system and flexibility [at the NCCC] helped me stay focused and complete my degree."

Meet Nicole, a current student at the NCCC!

Nicole is pursuing an associate of science in accounting degree through NCCC’s partnership with Riverland Community College.

As a student parent, Nicole shared that the available childcare makes a huge impact on her: “I think if I did not have that help, I would not have continued in college. I appreciate it a lot because taking care of 1-4 years old is a lot of work. Their patience is awesome!”

Meet Dom Venzant! Dom has been teaching at the college level since 2005 and at the NCCC since 2023. He chooses to teach at the NCCC because he believes in community-centered education and loves to witness the growth of the NCCC-supported students. “Art has a way of teaching patience, resilience, and adaptability,” he said. “I enjoy helping students realize that the creative process is not about perfection; it is about learning how to respond, problem-solve, and remain curious.”

Dom is teaching Drawing I this summer and students absolutely love his classes.

“I especially enjoy teaching art because it gives students permission to experiment, slow down, and discover what they are capable of with their own hands.”
