Learning beyond the classroom. Professor Huynh and American Studies major Mia Patlan joined Professor Ashley Sanchez and the Notre Dame Law School Immigration Clinic in Chicago to observe removal proceedings at the Chicago Immigration Court.

We’re grateful to the immigration judges who took time to speak with our students afterward and share more about their work and the court process. Prof Huynh and her students are participating in Justice in View, a court-watching, teaching, and research initiative based at Princeton University and Cal State Long Beach.

Meet Prof. Cody Musselman ✨

She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of American Studies! ☘️

Q: What class are you teaching this fall?

A: I’m teaching Sports and Religion.

Q: What are your research interests?

A: I research religion in and around American sports and fitness culture. As a scholar of American religion, I’m also interested in how religion intersects with consumer capitalism, health, and the wellness industry. I’m working on a book about religion and American fitness, but I’ve also done some research on cult marketing, spirituality and MLMs, and pregnancy in sports and fitness.

Q: What are you most excited about for the fall semester?

A: I’m most excited about getting to know my students and learning more about the traditions of Notre Dame through them! I’ve never been part of a big sports school, so I’m also really excited to attend some games. Some of my students are athletes, so I’d like to go watch their games/events. I’m also a really big fan of volleyball. As such, I plan to watch a few volleyball matches, and I’ll definitely go to a football game or two!

Q: What is a fun or interesting fact about you?

A: After college I lived and worked in Aspen, Colorado where I skied nearly 100-day/season!

Notre Dame’s spring 2027 course catalog will introduce American Sign Language 101, educating students on language and culture of the Deaf community. Originating from the Reilly Center’s Health, Humanities and Society minor, the three-credit course will be offered to any major but will not meet Notre Dame’s foreign language requirement.

The University has not offered an ASL course prior to the announcement while Saint Mary’s College previously offered ASL 1 and 2.

Expected to teach the course is professor Holly Kalling, who currently serves as an instructor of American Sign Language interpreting at Bethel University in the American Sign Language & Interpreting Department.

Kalling, a member of the Deaf community, has taught ASL for over 25 years for universities, homeschool co-ops and community courses. Kalling noted the language’s importance: “ASL is the third-most-used language in America, following English and Spanish. The more people who utilize ASL, the better.”
