03/17/2020

Dear METS Families,

As you may know, six counties in the Bay Area have been asked to 'Shelter in place' in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

As a non profit program in the Bay Area, this is devastating news, but we will comply with this order because your health and safety are the most important things to us. We will do our best to keep you informed of any additional developments.

Due to recent updates about COVID-19, we have decided to cancel all of our spring 2020 events and field trips. With Mills College transitioning to virtual online classes, the METS program will be out of the office through April 7th, 2020 (at least) and will follow CDC protocols and recommendations as they happen. Also, we have listed some educational resources below that may be beneficial to you and your students. Also, during OUSD’s closure, schools are providing free Grab and Go breakfast and lunch for students within the community. Please see the attachment below if one of your local schools is on this list.

We apologize for any inconvenience that these closures cause. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Until then please follow safety protocols and stay as healthy as you can.

If you need support from a METS advisor feel free to reach out to any of the following staff members:

Mayra Guevara, Director (español)
[email protected]

Lynna Din, Program Coordinator
(Oakland Tech, Fremont, CCPA)

Families should go to 2530 International Blvd, Oakland, 10am-5pm, Monday-Saturday. Families should complete this pre-registration form before picking up a device. Please follow protocols for social distancing to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Internet access may be an issue for many families. Some of the devices distributed by Tech Exchange will have a “hotspot” internet connection, but many devices require internet service. Comcast is currently offering low-income families 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service for new subscribers. This service is normally $9.95 a month.

On our way back from our field trip to Chico State! We started with a presentation from Chico State Admissions, followed by Chico State Educational Opportunity Program, and Chico State TRiO. The students also had the opportunity to discuss and ask questions with 4 Chico State TRiO students about how their college journey has been at Chico. We ened the afternoon with a tour of the campus. Such a lush campus!
